This is something I’ve always wondered about in regards to using a firearm for that mercy killing. If one were within city limits it would be illegal to use a firearm, even though no wildlife laws are intended to prohibit mercy killings.

I haven’t gone smaller diameter wise. I used my 308 this year, but after seeing the amount of meat loss from the damage I went out and picked up a 30-30 that I plan to use next deer season. Same caliber, just less umph.

Thanks! I’m definitely glad that I created this thread. In addition to getting lots of great advice from the other forum members, it also acted as something of a hunting journal, giving me something I can look back on and reflect about what worked, what didn’t, etc.
I was active army w/ a secret clearance as well, but it’s never caused any kind of delay for me.
The last name thing is what I was told causes most delays by a guy who just retired from OSP.
You must have a pretty common name. I have bought 3 or 4 guns since 114 passed, and have never had to wait more than 2-5 minutes, and that was before getting my CHL. I’m told it’s because there’s not a lot of people with my last name out here, so there’s very few people for the system to confuse...
