I’m pretty new to it, only 4 years in now, but fwiw I’ve seen way more deer in the timber than in clear cuts. It’s just something I haven’t figured out either. Even this year, I haven’t seen any deer in the cuts, but I’ve seen 3 bucks in the timber…just haven’t had a shot at any of them yet.
I can’t speak too much about it, as in still figuring it out myself. What I have found is that during those winter months, not only does snow help, but trails in general are easier to find and follow. The leaves/vegetation have died off as much as they’re going to, and the soft muddy ground...
Being that late in the year, you might have luck with a mineral lick. I generally don’t hear about foolish having much action with them during the general season, but as all the best natural food starts dwindling they might be more interested.
Here in W. Oregon the industrial timber has been closed to public access for most of the summer, except along the coast. The IFPL has come down one level, though, so I’m hoping a few more rains and they’ll open back up. I’ve got a bear tag that needs filled!
This is why I wear blaze orange vest & hat every time. No damn way someone can claim they thought I was some game animal. Not that that’s a guarantee they won’t still scope me, but it lessens the possibility.
But yeah, it’s chaos out there most days. More so than the other hunters though, it’s...
I have read it, and frankly I found it less helpful still. It’s over 30 years old, and western Oregon has changed a lot in that time. Also, it is really focused on hunting private land, which isn’t the reality for most of us.
I absolutely agree about Haugen’s book not being “scientific” at...
You do you. If I’m investing money, it’s staying put until retirement. I’m happy to hunt OTC tags and in my local area. Thats about $100 in tags, and maybe $100-200 in gas, per year. I can’t imagine dropping $30k on something that only lasts a week or two.
I’ve only found one shed so far and it was at about 900’ elevation. Stumbled across it while chasing a turkey.
I’m also in the Eugene area, but rarely get up above 2k ft elevation outside of the general season.
I’d be better able to answer this if I knew why the ref had changed to 4pt or better.
If it’s that the population is struggling to maintain healthy levels, then I’m going to report #2. Someone who’s aware of the need to carefully manage and conserve the wildlife, but disregards the greater...
Had mine done the week before my 26th birthday, and it’s been just shy of 7 years now. The proceedfure was simple and quick. They gave me a Valium, and I was cool as a cucumber. I didn’t care for the dr. narrating the whole procedure though. Like, I don’t need to know what that tugging feeling...
I won one of these in a raffle back in August. The 6.5CM w/ cryptek stock. It was cool rifle, and it shot pretty well, but mostly useless to me as I’m a lefty. I sold it to my friend for $650. It’s his first hunting rifle, hopefully it’ll serve him well for many years to come.
I’m one of these new adult hunters, and I quite agree with you in that the “why?” really is a sticking point for me. Why does everyone want to hunt “the west”?
I have no idea why people fetishize this “western” hunting so much, especially elk. Why is it held in any higher regard than hunting...
