    Any Search and Rescue volunteers?

Many volunteer SAR orgs will run an academy or training program, so don't worry too much about quals/certs going in as you can get those afterwards. Make sure your criminal history is clear, as you will get background checked and fingerprinted through the Sheriff's office (they are mandated to...

    Books on tracking?

@3325 has it right. All the man-tracking stuff is a great place to start especially if you can get into one of the formal tracking courses. (Local SAR may sometimes have an extra slot, or help with local resources. Local PD or sheriff as well, as they have POST-certified courses at times.)...

    Kifaru Bedlam Designing

Any of your secret designs match the want for a snow rig / big backcounty ski touring pack. Droppable main bag for big camps, avy shovel and pole pouch, big for cold weather gear, integrated lid, ski loops for a-frame carry, crampons pocket. Think: 5-7 day zero-degree skimo hut to hut or base...

New Career. What would you do?

Whatever you do, don't get wedded to it. You get good enough they give you jeweled-platinum handcuffs and you work your life into servitude chasing and retaining the almighty dollar. Then one you something causes you to look up, to "come up for air" and then you look around and go ... wait, is...

30-06 limitations or does it not have the “cool factor”

Out west there are quite a lot of places to get away from everyone and shoot that far out, easily. On another topic, and what I tell everyone: if you need your first rifle, 308/06/270/300WM are not likely where you want to go. There ARE more efficient cartridges around, and there is...

30-06 limitations or does it not have the “cool factor”

30-06 is a classic for a reason, but it doesn't have the panache of "new" and, sub-208gr, the 30-cal projectiles do not push the envelope of sexy-BCs. (30-06 chamber, just like 300WM, was never set up for ultra sleek bullets.) Where the 7 and 300PRCs start to shine is past 600, just due to...

SG Sky5900 vs Sky Archer 6400?

Fair. Details: 1) seems too tall and awkward for ducking branches and nav'ing blowdowns 2) asym design encourages unbalanced loads, including calling it a spotter pocket as optics are heavy/dense 3) asym design forgoes usable space on the opposite side 4) lid seems prone to snagging being...

SG Sky5900 vs Sky Archer 6400?

Probably because asym packs are not attractive with that growth hanging off one side. I'd put money that if you look at their sales history, that would even show up in the data. ST 6900 fixes this, but at that weight you're basically within a pound of a Kifaru frame plus bag of your choice...

Final Gear List Review for 4th rifle Elk in Colorado

@colt1776 I have an older Orca Core Element Half Zip Merino Jersey. I think it's a touch heavier than that 250, maybe 300? It's physically pretty heavy, but a nice temperature balance (more than LS merino, but not quite as hot as a light-puffy jacket when under a shell.) Hardshell is an...

Final Gear List Review for 4th rifle Elk in Colorado

Sounds good. My vest is a thin Eddie Bauer Primaloft I picked up a very long time ago ... love that thing since it is light, layers well, unrestrictive, packs well (though it almost never comes off) and adds a surprising amount of warmth. Light merino LS top and that, and, hiking, I am good...

Final Gear List Review for 4th rifle Elk in Colorado

That is a whole lot of clothing, especially if you are moving. Puffy pants are for static glassing only. Same with puffy jackets. Wearing that many layers is too much bulk unless you are sitting still. And that is a lot of pairs of gloves. This feels like a list from someone not used to...

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

Yep. And he's received a lot of options, but by biasing him towards 30-06 we keep him from going 338 Lapua or 375 Cheytac or otherwise. See? It is all plan of the larger plan ... :p Without getting into wildcats and fire-forming, 7 SAUM/7WSM/300WSM with a fast twist (1:8) barrel is where I...

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

100%. Weight, recoil, powder, noise, scope needs, etc. There is a reason an '06 with a 3-9 has stood the test of time.

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

Very true about the '06 - I can get 32xx with 130TTSX out of mine.

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

Even the 28SM and 30SM ADG brass is just 300PRC with a diff headstamp, so be super careful there. Not sure about the MAX. And yes, the overlap is way, way, way, too much. They all work just fine. Boringly so.

    Copper disappointment..

7mm-08 at 45 yards, no passthrough, and yet no mushroom from a bone hit? And you handload. You sure it wasn't a squib load?

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

@snopro176 even the 7 MEGA is fireformed from 300 WSM. FFing is time consuming and super annoying for a few FPS and the schtick of answering "what are you shooting." And then it gets annoying explaining it over and over, so I just say "basically a winmag" most of the time, because even 300...

If you had a new long action and only shot copper...

30 cal has slightly less BC then 7mm, but usually more mass/meplat for terminal damage. LA action, I would probably build a 28 Sherman Magnum. Take a 300 PRC, AI it, and then neck it to 7mm. Very similar to 7LRM from Gunwerks. If you want 30cal, 300PRC with the Alex Wheeler reamer is solid...
