    First heavy pack out nightmares

One thing to keep in mind when looking at pack frames is the contour profile. Some are “curved” and some are straight as an arrow. It obviously depends on an individuals anatomy to determine which one fits better. Generally speaking, the straight frames are actually likely not the correct fit...

    300 wsm short barrel

Copy. It sounds like you‘re set up. I like to mention the RCM’s from time to time because I think they are often overlooked without merit. They have attributes that are not completely understood.

Is there one brand that is truly the best for carrying weight?

I’ve used multiple Barney’s packs for years. I currently have the newest version with the Hunter bag. I’ve had the Yukon and the Pinnacle bags. There is a lumbar pad as an accessory you can get now. They do carry heavy weight well. They are a bit bulky and noisy. Guides like them for their size...

Hip Flexors- evidently a weak link for me

Vernon Griffith with GBRS has some excellent hip strengthening and stretching exercises.

    300 wsm short barrel

The 300 RCM is much more suited for short barrels than a WSM. In fact, it is arguably superior in a few different ways. If you are going to put a rifle together as opposed to finding a factory rifle, it‘s a no brainer. It may be an issue if you don’t handload as RCM ammo is a unicorn in many...

Is there one brand that is truly the best for carrying weight?

Incorrect pack fit/adjustment is a major problem in the hunting realm. I see it constantly. A lot of the time it is visible in the pack manufacturers own marketing pictures. I believe a lot of the “issues with comfort” that many have, with this pack or that pack, are due to this issue...

    Scope mounting to maintain zero

Wall thickness on scope tubes is a thing. Most “lightweight” scopes are not a good idea. Very few riflescopes are built correctly. Ring lapping should be a moot point with the correct tube wall thickness, barring any excessive action hole issues.

    Getting Deer In the Truck?

I have taken animals near logging roads in the lesser 48 with my vehicle nearby and still cut them up and put the quartered animal in the vehicle. Very simple and easy. Carcass left where it should be. I grew up hanging animals to cut up. I don’t care to fight gravity. I prefer flat on the...

    Getting Deer In the Truck?

I will start off by saying I am from Alaska. Bringing whole animals out of the field is hardly an option. I never bring whole animals out of the field. That seems silly to me. A small animal like a deer will require 5 game bags. 4 quarters and a bag for the rest. The gutless filet method is fast...

    Stone Glacier

This is the Avail on the Xcurve. Pull the shoulder straps and belt off. Buckles and Tri-slides line up. Great for horn hunting.

    Emergency blanket actual use?

I have done this a few times on sheep hunts. Instead of candles I use Sterno. I have packed cans of Sterno in my kit for years. Excellent fire starter as well. I killed a large ram alongside a glacier one year after an all day stalk. It got dark soon after. I was a few miles from my tent. It...

    New/Old guy from Alaska

Greetings. I have been a reader and follower of this forum for a long time. I finally decided to sign up. This is a great place to learn and share. Winter is coming shortly here in Alaska. This usually allows more free time for forum interaction. Look forward to it.

    Stone Glacier

The Avail attaches nicely to the Krux or the XCurve and turns into the SG version of the Kifaru Stryker XL. I do this frequently.
