What hunter stage are you in?

Fun poll, but I'm not in love with the description of the last category. To imply any other level of hunter is not a "sportsman" is a bit disrespectful. I'm still at the phase where I'm actively seeking to fill the tags in my pocket every time I go out. I don't blast things indiscriminately...

All Terrian tire that's not All Terrian

The correct answer here is: Pirelli Scorpion A S Plus 3's. The finest all season tire in the market. They have handled absolutely everything with poise and comfort on my Grand Cherokee.

Should hunting be uncomfortable? -Bringing up young hunters

Yes, it is supposed to be uncomfortable. "Embrace the suck" is the expression that comes to mind. You know the youngster better than us, so use your gauge and see if they're uncomfortable or TOO uncomfortable. I just spent opening day of my 25th Pennsylvania deer season shivering and saw...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

I covered my previously painted reloading bench top with a fresh sheet of Formica. Visibility is much better and it's easier to clean. Only cost about $100 and an afternoon's worth of time. 👍

Anyone ever flew with their frame pack as their "personal item"?

@Coffindaffer I wanted to wait until I was back, but I just took my Badlands MRK2 to Colorado and used it as my personal, under-the-seat item with absolutely no issue. Four different flights, too. I made sure to not jam it full of stuff, but it had all my travel stuff in it and an extra set of...

30-30 Copper ammo (Barnes) penciled through Whitetail Buck this morning...thoughts?

100% agree. If you didn't recover the bullet, it is impossible to say with any certainty it "penciled" through. Shots are not all the same; animal flesh is a varied medium; and because of that, bullet performance isn't identical all the time. I have hunted almost exclusively with Barnes...

First time hunting, got my buck but unsure about ammo for next year...

Congrats on your first deer - a pic, maybe?! As others have stated, the bullet wasn't really at fault here. The fact it went the whole way through is optimal, IMO. SST's are a softer-ish bullet and really shine on deer and other small critters, so I'd say don't change a thing and make...

    30-06 bullet recommendations?

This! Works great in my '06 with either IMR-4831 (more accurate) or Ramshot Hunter (a bit more speed). Plus, if you stake out Shooter's Pro Shop, you can catch some blems or overruns for a good deal. I stocked up for life a few years back for a song.

    6.5x55 or 6.5 PRC

Given the two you mention, the PRC is the obvious choice. There are far more options in ammo, and it's way easier to find. Accuracy, terminal performance, barrel life, etc. are all a wash when stacked against your needs, so they aren't really a deciding factor. As for recoil, if you can shoot...

    Leupold 2.5-8x36 still worth it?

Are the new ones worth it? I would say "no" only because the used market for older scopes is so robust. Personally, I've had good success with used Leupolds and never have a fear of buying one because of the warranty. They all get a good range testing for a while before it's prime time. My...

Fighting boredom in all day sits.

I suppose a thread like this comes up every so often as we're on the eve of the rifle season here in PA. For me, the slow pace IS the draw. I go into the woods to hunt, but the other 50% of the reason is to let the rest of life simply melt away and re-center myself. Sure, I'll goof around on...

Well, that's annoying. 257 Roberts and Barnes TSX.

I don't think it's as bad as you make it out. Traditionally, the Barnes have loved a healthy bit of jump prior to engaging the rifling. I've loaded them in 4 different calibers over the years and every one is seated so the case mouth is right at the bottom of the top groove on the bullet. No...

    WTB New 300 Savage Brass

Looking for a quantity of unfired 300 Savage brass anyone might want to liquidate. I'm not picky about headstamp, either. Many thanks!

Is Gray with a tinge of blue a hunt-able color?

I'd hunt in that for sure. I only get the slightest bit of blue out of it, and I've hunted for a long time in things that very color or really close to it. Looks like the color of a lot of trees under which I've sat! I like your outside the box thinking on hunting clothes. For $30 maybe buy two...

Snack bars, healthy eats on a hunt?

This! I discovered these a few years ago at the local convenience store and have been hooked ever since. The cookie dough flavor is also outstanding. 🤤

Torso Length Measurement - What now?

Great and clear answer! This helps a lot and in messing around with yoke length and strap configuration, I think I'm dialed in. I had 70lbs of ballast in it yesterday and went for a 1mile walk around the house to test it out. The weight is there for sure but not riding poorly on me.

Sold Kuiu Venture Divide 3000, as-new!

I recently stumbled into a pack that'll serve both deer and elk hauling duty, and with only so much room in the basement I've decided to sell my Venture Divide 3000. I bought it mid-season last year and used it a few times, but I'm generally very easy on my gear and it's still in as-new...

Torso Length Measurement - What now?

OK, so I've searched the heck out of the forum, watched all the YouTube videos, and evaluated things. I had the wife measure my torso according to every guide out there (top of iliac crest to C7) and the number is 17.5". My pack has an adjustable yoke, so I have adjustment range, but the...

Big bore build, grouse to Cape buffalo

Outstanding! Sub'd for sure. You've got quite the project in front of you, and it sounds like you have ample time to work on it. Winter is coming, and there's nothing that passes the time better than carving away on a wood stock in the shop. You can kill hours down there without realizing...

Are lightweight baselayer bottoms a waste?

I've been wondering this myself. It's tough to convince me it's cold enough to need a lightweight bottom but not cold enough to wear a heavier weight bottom. That seems like a very narrow and temporary window. Personally, I haven't found "leg sweat" to be a significant issue when hunting...
