I also over thought it for a while.
you can use micro climate to your advantage too. Some cool timber pockets can down draft while the adjacent sunny avalanche chute is going up. Stalked up the timber early afternoon before thermals shifted. Sometimes you just never know what it’s doing until...
I’m still confused why muzzy season is in the middle of archery. Messes everything up. Shorten archery if necessary, do a muzzy season before rifle and do 3 rifle seasons.
I thought that means you have zero points and you’re putting it as a first choice hunt. You don’t get pref pt if you draw. I thought 2nd choice is 2nd choice. I think that’s different than drawing with zero. But not sure. Good question!
I don’t hold it out, I hold it down and then come up after I draw. I’ll practice having pin on deer at draw. Never even thought of that. Good suggestion.
This approach makes sense to me. Those stalks to bedded deer in deep shit and waiting for standing hasn’t worked for me. My best three ops have been deer up and moving.
Mid way through my first year archery mule deer hunting, and curious as to how many encounters it takes you guys to close the deal? I’m currently 0/7 and while I’m glad to be in the middle of them, I’m super frustrated to not have a deer down by now. I’ve killed probably 30 whitetails with bow...
Wasn’t trying to make buddies. Just saying hello seemed appropriate if we were at same trail head. Didn’t get to that part about sharing plans since he totally ignored me with his attitude.
For example, on opener, ran into 2 other guys hunting the same basin and a few really nice deer within...
Interesting thread. I rolled up to my C option yesterday, around 2:30, as it’s easy to get to, and has deer. I’m archery hunting. Planning to do a quick evening and morning hunt in the basin (popular trails also cross basin, but deer are there). Always people there, and a guy is camped with his...
Friday, I headed out to my basin where I’ve been watching 3 very nice deer and some smaller ones all of August. First archery mule deer hunt, and as a local, I’ve been to this spot a lot. Saw no other hunters scouting during my 6 or so trips there, and was trying not to get too optimist to have...
Been using 15s on tripod for comfort and I can tell if it’s a shooter. But I’m not looking for a trophy.
With that said I’m curious to look at these dudes through a spotter, so borrowing one for a day.
Good start to locating for my first Archery Mule deer hunt. 7 in a group, 4 of which I’d be thrilled to harvest. Let’s hope they stay put and no one chase them off!!
Well, he multiplied in 5 bucks( 2 nice ones!) watched them do their thing this morning, thanks for the info. Learning my way around these bucks.
They worked their way down into the west facing willow to bed. Smart crew, one dropped back, checking their six out of the willows.
I like this. I was considering scouting options B,C etc, but this one is far better than anything I’ve seen in my unit. Might as well go all in! Damn seeing a beast really got me pumped for deer season!
Makes sense. I’m above him in AM, with favorable wind, but less favorable approaches. Assuming he hangs out consistently in that basin feeding in AM, would you ever try to drop in during night and ambush him at dawn or is that too risky to bring in smell?
In this morning scouting session, I’ve located a gorgeous buck in a remote basin surrounded by steep loose rocks/scree. would you leave him be until CO archery opening and hope he stays put or keep tabs on him? I can observe from the ridge line, accessing from an adjacent basin.
