What do you guys do to improve skill during off season? I’m at the point in my life where I have time to devote to becoming a better hunter (Deer and Elk). I live near winter range for big game.
Here’s where I’m at but looking for ideas:
Observing resident elk in some lower country and...
For sure, that’s what happened to me even though I said I wouldn’t! But I do think demand is high enough that they will sell those tags, just to more thoughtful people.
Colorado CPW has a map that show migratory routes and also a separate layer that show areas with resident herds. Can’t speak about other states, but here in CO, we have both in similar areas.
I think as a hunters it’s important that we go above and beyond to abide by the rules of the law. Hunting opportunities are being squeezed and we share our forests with other users. We don’t get to pick and choose what we think is an important rule to follow. Breaking laws and not calling out...
CO sells the most elk tags, by far. And there’s 5.8 M people that live here. So yes, it’s crowded and we just want to hunt local without supporting the rest of the USAs desire for a mountain adventure with a weapon.

Everyone has opinions and some are wrong. I’m planning to camp in a meadow below the timber where the elk are. But they don’t use the meadow right now, as I’ve scouted. But to the “expert” OTC guy, I’m sure I’ll get an earful while they walk in 5 miles past the elk..
Another thought that I often have, is that unless you are hunting pristine wilderness way the f back, all these animals pick up scattered human scent from time to time. I think when the scent becomes stronger and specific for them is when they start to spook. Obviously dependent on where and...
