More than one way to skin a cat... that looks like a pretty good way.
They key to getting the sheaths off is to cook 4-6 hours with bottom of the horn partially submerged. Stick a 2x4 in between the horns from the rear, put your foot down on the 2x4, and TWIST. Before you go thinking this will...
As many have suggested, 140 gr is the sweet spot for the 08, varget or biggame powder. My current load out of a tikka uses 140 gr accubonds over biggame powder. Another savage 08 like partitions over varget.
My boys are showing great interest in using my spotter - so much so I can barely steal a peek. It's time for them to have one. I can't splurge for the big $$$. I'm interested to hear feedback from those who have used the Vortex Diamondbacks or similar scope in that class.
Thanks a bunch!
Do you reload? I reload, but found that mine shoots the crap out of norma bondstrikes, so will use them this year. I've had great luck with barnes 165 handloads out of the rifle also. I lucked out with this one, she shoots about anything.
I always have game bags with me. I have a small canvas bag that I stuff with 2-3 rolled up game bags. Makes for a quick rear rest and I'm not carrying something extra.
I have ran some bailing wire on some stakes around mine to help keep them away from the blind. There were a lot of cows in the area and they didn't bother my blind.
Doing stuff to Tikkas does seem popular. I think there are plenty of people around who don't and have fine shooting rifles. I have two that shoot great and I've done nothing to them, with no plans to do so.
Building them up is cool if that's your thing... better than blowing it all on many...
The problem with behind the shoulder on elk in rough terrain, especially with a mono, is lack of expansion and damage. Sure, the elk will most likely die, but how far down a canyon will you have to chase it? Been there, done that. It's not for me.
It's a wise practice to shoot elk in the shoulder and to pour it on as long as they are up and moving. People who do otherwise will eventually lose one.
They are pretty stiff in my estimation, but I went from years of more flexible boots to these. I have ankle trouble, so it was time for a more substantial boot. I tried on several brands and found the Zamberlan to be most comfy. They are stiffer than a lot of boots, but they have worked out well...
I have both. Similar quality. Action on the Sako is tighter, with 3 lug bolt. I do like that. 4 in the mag for a 300 wsm is nice, too. That said, accuracy is comparable.
Why do you have the rifle? To be honest the mags in tikka are hard thumping. They aren't great for the range. But they are great to carry while hunting and highly effective at killing. If you aim to use it for larger game, I'd shoot it sparingly at the range, practice with lighter calibers, and...
