Long distance practice is fun. We practice often past the effective killing distance of our rifles.
About the UM rings...They are awesome. Bulletproof. You can't understand it until you put them in your hands. Downsides are cost and weight. That's pretty much it.
I am planning to retire in my early 50s as well. But unlike most commenting here I do not have some huge front loaded 401k. The life of a small business owner works that way sometimes. IMHO you will need a way to generate REAL income after you quit your regular job. There's no way about it...
Oh gotcha. No sweat. Here are the couple of wound pics I have from this season. First is an exit on an Antelope at 325 yards. (I know not an elk but golf ball sized exits tend to kill stuff. LOL) Second is an entrance on a mature muley buck at 370 yards. Both factory 108 ELD-M. This rifle killed...
See if this link works. I'd be starting my research with these manufacturers.

Sounds like you have a decade until you wan to touch the lump sum you have plans to leave alone until 55yo. I would highly suggest spending that time learning how to manage that money on your own and generate alpha above the historical S&P average. That's PLENTY of time to do that. Then, you can...
I just built the rifle this year and haven't had a shot on an elk yet but yes. It's what I will use for elk. Why wouldn't I? There are hundreds of elk kill reports in the 6mm thread and I have seen what it does to a mature mule deer buck. The ELD-M I am shooting out of it is absolutely...
This part right here is why I love the 6mm's. It's just so darn easy to keep shooting regardless of the circumstances. And more holes puts animals on the ground faster regardless of caliber. I find myself shooting animals that don't know they are dead yet much more now. LOL.
Add a suppressor...
A few people have made comments that "Roksliders" probably make up a very small portion of SWFA sales. I find that laughable. No "normal" hunter is buying a 3-15 SWFA for $650 when they can buy a Leupold VX3 or a Vortex whatever for similar money. Normal people will buy those two WAAAAY before...
Palominos are junk. That's a Forest River brand. If you want a nicer style popup on a budget I'd be looking for a used Northstar. The way they have the underbed storage and optional ceiling mounted cabinets is super slick. And they are very well made. A lot of their models are only 7'6" wide...
Blows my mind how many people are just going to forget about the almost total lack of existence and support SWFA has had for the past two years. I'll stick with companies that actually have a robust enough business to keep things in stock reasonably in case something needs fixing or replacement...
Jim is exactly right. These dudes are heavy. I've had a Lance 855(non slide) and an ATC Cougar. The Lance was on a 1 ton SRW Ram with just under 4k of payload.Zero question I was right at that loaded for a trip. And dry that camper was supposedly less than 3k. That said, it was a phenomenal...
I'm right at the equivalent of a 24" barrel WITH the Scythe installed. Almost everything I have is cut to 18 or less and the one 6.5CM I have cut to 20" I wish I had cut it shorter.
100% the LEM. Tomorrow Cabelas could choose to swap which brand grinder they put the Cabelas name on and stop carrying parts.
LEM will have parts for what you buy for a very, very long time.
Sounds like you are in a good place then. I'd do the VA5 upgrade and see how that works out first. You will need a thread adapter to make it work so order that when you get the head.
The Vortex head just unscrews if you tighten the handle hard and unscrew it. It's on there pretty good but it...
