Yeah I was surprised with the numbers. We had a low of 2730 and high of 2780 and lots in between. My daughter shot her mule deer last year with this load and we noticed that. Full pass through, but lots of bloodshot meat and tore up the sliver of shoulder she caught with it. I'm pretty much...
Hornady 340gr .50cal ELD-X Bore Driver
A quick search came up with this. Other posts on modernmuzzleloader talk about how they might be a little soft for close shots.
Took my (13 year old) son out one last time to make sure he was ready for his mule deer hunt that starts Saturday. Hornady custom lite 120 sst reduced recoil loads. Barely any recoil at all. 2750 fps average sighted in at 250 yards with 20" barrel. Basically good to hold dead on from 0-300...
You are obviously set on ft lbs as a deciding factor. The 6.8 will shoot heavier bullets faster and give you more ft lbs. I would buy a new rifle and keep the 270 how it is for sentimental reasons.
I guess according to this it would be in between 6 o'clock and center of mass for me. I set it to hit right above the front post. I guess it changes at distance and what size target you are using also. I'm sure everyone gets the point.
Good posts here. My son's hunt in NV is Oct 5-Nov 5. My daughter had the same hunt last year. It was 2.5-3 weeks of no bucks besides little guys on private, then bam Oct 29 6-10 bucks a day. She got hers on Nov 3rd. We have some other high country e-scouted and plan to hit that the first...
I decided to shoot mine with the old "pumpkin on a post" saying. I set point of impact just above where the front fiber optic sight was set. That way it was not covering up where I was trying hit. I was able to reliably shoot to 200 yards this way and it worked fine on my elk hunt. I was...
I borrowed a TC Encore for my hunt last year and left it loaded for 4 days, but its dry here in NV. I bought a TC Omega and have been getting it ready for my personal gun. Check out the modern muzzleloader forums. They have a really good classifieds section.
My kids both started off with 7mm-08 Hornady custom lite 120 grain sst which have worked great for Mule deer and hardly recoil at all. My daughter has gone to 140 accubond now. 165 eld-x are available if they every want to go that high. I think the 7mm-08 is something that can really grow...
I bought a Spot Hogg Whipper snapper on ebay for $65 just to see if I liked a thumb release. I love it and it shrunk my groups. They are about $100 new.
There is one in the archery classifieds for $70 right now too.
we went with something similar to this when we flew to Texas last year. We put the ammo and gun together in the case and everything was pretty easy with Southwest.
Cabelas long gun case
I'm looking at the same thing, but the cartridges I am looking at are 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC, and 280ai. Less recoil and all will take anything out to 500 no problem. I really like the 280ai, but the selection of rifles has taken a back seat to 7mm PRC. I think 6.5 PRC would do everything I need, but...
