If you are going for low miles you and your son should test drive both and see which one feels better. If you were going for higher milaege I would pick the Tacoma. Toyotas are great, but there are plenty of happy Nissan drivers out there.
You can pick up a code reader from harbor freight for $30 and see if anything comes up. I also like to do a compression test if they will let me or take it to a mechanic they dont know. Carfax is also a good way to go.
