Cleaner, yes. It's basically a smokeless powder that can be used bulk for bulk in place of blackpowder.
More consistent, not really. Certainly not lot-to-lot, BH209 can vary greatly. For velocity spreads, I've seen very few report BH209 with extreme spreads that were anything spectacular...
I almost hate that I found this to be true. I was happily shooting my fixed crawl with a little twang and good accuracy, right up until I tried split fingers. It is quite astounding how much quieter split fingers is, and I'm not sure why I didn't notice until now.
I've been reading through a lot of what Dr. Ed Ashby has posted on the Ashby Bowhunting Reports. Much of it seems common sense. Less friction = more penetration. I've got a lot more to read through yet.
One of the things that I'm not liking is that everything so far has been summary reports...
I've never tried that specifically, but I used a plain old poly tarp for quite a while. Back then I didn't even have a ridgeline on my hammock, so no, I did not hang it from it. I had a ridgeline going through the corners of the tarp which I tied to the trees. Then I just staked out the two...
That's a cheap little #8 grinder. I wouldn't expect it to to much. Who knows whats in it, plastic gears and other nonsense. Just another kitchen gadget people use once and stuff in the back of the cupboard.
If you want a cheap electric, most people are going to say go with the #12 Weston. It's...
For the time you did. It's hard to go wrong with Thompson Center. They were always cutting edge right up until 2007 when Smith and Wesson bought them. That's about the time blackhorn 209 came out too. They went downhill fast and never really did anything good again.
Today I would think most in...
I've hunted elk in Bighorn mountains Wyoming and Black Hills SD (I'm an SD resident). I have never hunted the north end of the hills for anything. Comparing those two, the BH's are way better in every metric. More elk, easier access, better vision, and most importantly there's not a lot of uber...
The TC Encore is one of the few that always worked with BH209. I don't think they ever even made a special "BH209 breech plug" for them. That was back near the end for TC when they were actually a competitive, innovative company. It's crazy to think how influential they were for so long, to how...
I feel like I missed something important. Isn't a 45# draw recurve the gold standard for hunting traditional bows? 40# draw doesn't seem that big a deal to me, and has always been legal in every state I'm aware of.
Also, what is an RF fanboy?
Depends on the rifle you buy. I would assume most of the inlines made today should come with breech plugs made to handle BH209. I'm surprised the CVA wolf doesn't. This was much more of a concern 15 years ago. Try an older inline like an H&R Huntsman with BH209. No Bueno.
Yes, that's one of the downsides to BH209 is it doesn't work in everything. It only works in inlines with breech plugs designed for it, and only with Federal 209A or CCI 209M primers.
I agree, but at the same time you just said good peep/aperture sights are adequate to 200 yards. Adding a scope to a CVA Wolf does not make it a 300 yard rifle. There's lots of internet jabber, and 3 shot "groups" about 300 yard muzzleloaders, but for 99% of people the accuracy and ballistics...
I have very little equipment. We have an old tractor, but its not worth much. I do most of the pulling with my truck. The only thing we have is a small disc, maybe 6' wide. No spreader or cultipacker or anything like that. All seed and fertilizer spreading is done with a handheld broadcast...
Not for good eyes. Even the best target aperture sights can be tough to an older person, or simply bad eyes, especially astigmatism. I don't think a scope gives anyone an unfair advantage, unless it's coupled with a rifle which gives them an unfair advantage. This is one reason I like the idea...
Since I did not know what other fertilizers I could find, I stopped at 200 pounds of 10-10-10. According to the chart, I was going to get 0-20-20, and add 150 pounds of that to split the difference. Since I couldn't I stopped at 200, rather than the 300 I was going to do. Lets assume the local...
Am I supposed to work the fertilizer into the soil? You'll have to treat me like I'm a 6 year old, I'm not much of a farmer. If that spot has been a hay field, it was a long time ago. My great grandpa used to rent it out for cattle, but that was 30 years ago. In my lifetime I can't remember any...
This is nothing against you, but the only way I'd ever step foot in Pennsylvania, or NY, RI, CT, basically any new england state except maybe Maine, is if someone pays me a good chunk of money to be there.
