    Let’s see your bird vests.

I took this fjalraven out quail hunting for a morning. I only flushed one covey on the way back to the car after hunting all morning…and I missed with both barrels. Tried to follow them a bit but the area was thick and steep and I lost them.

    Let’s see your bird vests.

Going out tomorrow. Hoping to find some quail in a prairie 1.5-2 miles from the trailhead. I’ve seen them there earlier in the year. Love my Filson tin cloth game bag, but wishing I had a more substantial vest.

    Choosing a Dog

How can I know what a litter’s genetics are like. I’m very ignorant on it about this. Are there specific questions I should ask the breeders?

    Choosing a Dog

Hey all, I am starting to do some research on bird dog breeds and training. hoping to get a dog in the next couple years. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations on dog breeds that would work for me. I'd also like some advice on training and bird dog ownership in general. I owned an...

Essential upland bird gear for under $30

If he doesn't have them, game shears, i actually bought a pair of commercial poultry shears, have been a game changer for me. They make dressing birds and small game so much easier.

    Aging a black bear

Just blew an opportunity at a much larger one. It’s pouring rain, I’ve been sick like two weeks and haven’t gotten out much, so happy to be out on the last day of deer season. I bumped a couple of deer close to a meadow, quickly and quietly work my way to the meadow and see a big bear feeding...

    Aging a black bear

Thanks for the encouragement. I’m 30 with two toddlers so I feel like if I don’t figure it out soon I won’t be able to pass it along. I’m also a teacher and fall is the busiest time of year. I’m getting out as much as I can but I wish I could take a couple longer trips. Thanks for the...

    Aging a black bear

Just missed a shot at another one. I had my scope on him but he went and crossed a meadow. I could only see the top of his head and back. A shot rang out in the distance and he ran back to where he had been. I got my scope on him again. He was facing away from me so I was waiting for him to...

    Aging a black bear

Hey all, I’ve never shot a bear. I had one in my crosshairs today for the first time. It was maybe 30 yards, and would have been an incredibly easy shot. It had no idea i was there and I watched it for maybe 10 minutes. CA law says no cubs, cubs being less than one year old or less than 50...

    Let’s see your bird vests.

Used my Filson for the first time this season. It’s really perfect for this kind of hunting. Driving around and walking old logging roads looking for mountain quail. Never more than a mile or so from the car. It was probably around 70 degrees by the time we left and that waxed canvas gets a...
