    Duck and goose blind

We sold our six layout blinds five years ago and only use Momarsh recliners with ghilly blankets in the field. We crib in dekes close in around each of us and the birds never bat an eye at you. We have far better decoying results on ducks and geese with that system for 4-6 guys in a field...

chokes for upland birds, mainly pheasants

I hunt pheasants and waterfowl about 30 days each fall. All three of my guns are 28" barrels and I use modified chokes in each, for all birds. Would never consider anything else. Prairie Storm #5s for roosters, Hevi Metal for waterfowl. Those loads and a modified choke is all you need.

    South Central MN

Welcome from Minneapolis. Just back from Manitoba where it all froze up. Saw a lot of moose and big whitetails as we kept waiting for the mallards who were rather scarce.

    Kotzebue Hunt Recap

I trained for 18 months for our hunt. Lifted, ran, biked, hill climbed with a weight vest etc. I am mid 50s but 5'10" and 145 lbs. I was the smallest guy in our group by a long shot. I felt I could do everything the trip required of me, but we dropped three bulls the last afternoon at 2 miles...

Backpack training - how much weight?

I just did a backpack caribou hunt in the Brooks Range. I started training 18 months prior to leaving. Goal was to put on five pounds of muscle, but ended up losing ten pounds during training. I am over 50 and I mixed in cardio, weights and 2X per week I would walk hills or an inclined...

    Wyoming grizzlies

On August 31st, my very first day caribou hunting in Alaska's Brooks Range, I was with one of my partners on a drop hunt. We both carried lighter caliber rifles and Glock 20 10mms. We spotted a herd of five nice bulls one ridge away. I dropped my pack, left my pistol with it and solo stalked...

    Sidearm caliber

I carried my Glock 20 10mm two weeks ago in Alaska while caribou hunting. Used a Gunfighters Inc. Kenai holster. Worked great with my pack system. I practiced with Buffalo Bore hard cast 230 gr ammo during the summer. My only observation is that my gun and magazines fed best when I only...

    Walking on Tundra Hussocks

We hunted the Brooks Range for caribou from August 31- September 7th. Four of us had both stockingfoot waders and wading boots, as well as our Crispi mountain boots and Kuiu gaiters. After 1.5 days of walking around in my waders and Simms G3 Guide boots, I was done. The tundra was so awful to...

Bowhunt for 'bou in '20 or '21?

We talked to two groups of bowhunters in Kotzebue last week as we were preparing to get flown into the Brooks Range on our caribou hunt. They went 1 for 8 in total. The only caribou that was shot was taken at 85 yards. Both groups had a very hard time getting closer than 100 yards because of the...

    Arctic Air Unguided Caribou Hunt

Two of us got out of the bush on Saturday as planned. My other two buddies were stuck in the field until Monday afternoon due to the winds. They only got home yesterday at 2:30 pm. Good luck and hope you aren't delayed too long getting dropped into camp.

    Arctic Air Unguided Caribou Hunt

We had a ton of left over cannisters of fuel. We used one every other day. Not an issue. AA gives you excess of what you will likely need. We had two stoves but cooked on one the whole trip.

    Arctic Air Unguided Caribou Hunt

In response to the questions about bipods, my two cents is that you are just adding weight. Use your trekking poles crossed with the handles looped over the other one. I practiced out to 400 yards on those before the trip. Rock solid, weight saving, and that is the rest that i shot my caribou...

    Arctic Air Unguided Caribou Hunt

AK Air only gave us that caution on our flight back to Anchorage from Kotzebue, not into Kotzebue. We put the meat and antler boxes on standby status. FYI: Delta charged us $540 for two boxes of meat and one antler box. AK Air didn't ding us on our Anchorage leg. Not sure why. Good luck...

    2019 Caribou Meat Pole

Here are two of the three bulls our group got last Friday in Unit 23 in the Brooks Range foothills. We saw the group of six bulls coming at us a mile away and we mad dashed 3/4 of a mile to cut them off. We shot them at 56 yards as they came over a hill right in front of us. First time in...

Ptarmigan? Common o n bou hunts?

Last week we head shot them with our 10mm pistols. Not enough around to justify bringing a shotgun and its weight.

    Arctic Air Unguided Caribou Hunt

We got back Monday after hunting with Arctic Air August 31-September 7th. The weather was warm at first and we had a south wind until our last day. Saw hardly any caribou until the 6th which was cold with a strong north wind, and then they were all over us. We shot three that day, and could...
