Gently used Mathews V3X 33. Bought it and realized that I wanted a 29 while it was inbound.
Mathews V3X 33 Granite
Mathews Detachable LowPro Quiver
Mathews/QAD Drop Away
Gas Strings with nose button
Bowman grip wrap
G Module installed (28.5”/70lb/85%)
Would trade for a V3X 29 or optics...
I was able to grab a couple hundred of the Nosler 175 ABLR to try out and see how they shoot. Now I just need to get my rifle back with the new barrel and put all together. If they shoot decently enough, I will probably try to stick with them. If they don’t, I think the plan is to try out some...
While I have never tried any monos, I am sure that they would be bad medicine for any animal that I would be chasing. The TSX doesn't interest me nearly as much as the LRX 168 gr does, but I am admittedly ignorant about them.
Guess I have another one to look at...
I really appreciate the replies so far. I completely forgot to mention the ELDX 175 gr as an option that I have been considering, and the Terminal Ascent wasn't even on my radar. The Berger 195 gr is another one that I need to look into.
Heavier bullets have always made sense to me personally...
I recently picked up a 24" Proof Sendero .284" Blank with 1:8" twist, with the intention of doing a barrel swap and chambering another 7 Rem Mag. I have to wait a little bit because we are in the middle of a move to NM where I will have the ability to chase a lot of game that I am unfamiliar...
I have never had the VX5 and SHV lines side by side, I have had a chance to handle and shoot both of them. The Leupold glass seems to be a little nicer to my eyes, but that could be have just been my imagination. The Leupold locking turret is also nicer than the Zero Set on the SHV to me as...
Everybody has their own preferences, but I care more about the low side of the magnification range than I do the high side when I am hunting within a couple hundred yards. A solid 3x-9x should do everything you are need it to inside 250 yds, but you could look at 2x-10x or similar ranges...
Site specific and local expertise would be your best option, but we have had good luck with trying to get as much diversity as possible. Generally speaking, diversity has been very productive for us. Food plots, hardwoods, and brushy cover have always done well attracting and holding deer. We...
It wasn't a firearm, but that Red Ryder killed a lot of tin cans and clay pigeons. Was introduced to rifles on a Remington Nylon 66 (.22LR) that I still shoot when I go visit my parents for the nastalgia. Pistols was a Ruger Single Six (.22LR) that still rides shotgun with my dad for snakes...
I have been very happy with the NBT 90 grain on deer. One of the best blood trails I have ever seem came from that round, even though I watched the deer go down and didn't have to track it. I know they hold together well too because I have used them as close as 8 yds, but they aren't screaming...
I grabbed a Vortex LH 1.5-8x32 and have been very happy with it over the last couple of years. 1.5x has been very quick in cover, but I like having the ability to go up to 8x if I need to stretch out a little. Comes in at 13.4oz, which is more than acceptable for my uses. Might be worth looking...
I like to sight in my rifles the way I plan on shooting them. Using a lead sled is perfectly fine if you are going to use one in the field. If I plan on using a bipod in the field I will use one to sight in, same with sandbags. The setup that I use the most often is just a 50 lb bag of corn as a...
I was very happy with the SHV’s that I have had. Used a couple of the F1 scopes for two or three years until I decided that I wanted to try something new, but I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. They always tracked well for me and the glass was good enough to my eye.
There are a lot of variables that should help decide how high to go on any given tree, and every tree is going to be different. Some are better hunted at 10 feet, and some are better at 20+ feet. Vegetation, shooting lanes, visibility, etc. will all determine the best height for that particular...
I have used the Mark 5 and the NX8 2.5-20 for the last 18 months or so, and I like them both. My Leupold isn't illuminated, but I don't really need it for what I'm using it for. My NX8 is more particular about the parallax adjustment, but it isn't bad enough to be burdensome or frustrating to...
I have tried a handful of scents over the years, and none of them have ever made a noticeable difference. There have been times that deer have ignored them and there have been times where it seemed like they were actively avoiding it.
There are more productive ways to spend your time and money.
I really appreciate the responses, and I completely understand that driving up the hill and actually getting in the woods will do more good than anything else. It sounds like some of you are familiar with the area as well.
I was talking with some coworkers today about hunting and the draw...
I honestly haven’t gotten to see a whole lot other than on-site (LANL), but I have only been out here a week or so. The my list of places to hike/camp/explore is getting longer and longer, I eventually need to start working on getting out there to see some of them.
I am hoping that once I get...
Finally decided to introduce myself...
I was born and raised hunting and fishing on our cattle ranch in central Texas where I spent most of my time chasing doves, ducks, deer, and pigs. There were a couple of years of active duty that didn't allow me to hunt, but I was able to sneak in some...
