You can request the raw data from ADFG. They don't calculate the numbers for you, you'll have to dig into it yourself.
The population issue has little to nothing to do with killing rams or who kills them. If it is an issue, then we are all to blame, and all the studies that suggest that...
Hunter number have been static for the last 10 years, there are actually fewer NR today than at any point in the past. Around 400, and about 65-75 of those are next of kin.
Fewer than 1% of resident sheep hunters kill more than one ram in 4 years. ~70% of all resident sheep hunters are on...
If the guard its free, they are usually the last resort. Many of the extraction services will only land during the day on flat terrain. I've talked with a few guys in the guard on this over the years.
If its not a guard helo, wave them off, or expect a bill. haha
Don't pick on Sourdough. He used to live in Anchorage and now can only see the lights of it from his cabin. He tries to tell people how bad ass he is, after he moved here from CA of course, and how he lives off the land. This guy is a joke.
The only thing he's hunted in the last "ten" + (10)...
I still think you're the same guy from Hope. He also believes that a "real hunt" can only be achieved in the course of a month or "SIX" (6) weeks [I included the number twice so you really understand how "important" it is?] Any time shorter than that, hell, you might as well just go grocery...
Care to share what you think is a "trophy" animal in your mind, or is there such a "thing?"
Does a successful hunt require "two" or "more" animals to be worth it?
Is the "experience" worth anything or is all about killing a boat load of caribou for your freezer, and living off govern't cheese...
This one has taken 10 rams now. I guess I'd say it qualifies as a "sheep rig." Its also pretty handy for caribou, deer, and even a brown bear. Kimber Montana 308 win.
Sounds like you got your money's worth! Sucks about the sheep numbers. They have been pitiful across most of the state.
There is usually only 2-3 40" rams killed in the TMA early season, and about the same on the later hunt. There have been a few exceptional years where 7-8 were killed. I...
Location of ammo is the airlines choice. Some allow it in the rifle case others do not. On international flights, some require it in a locked box. In most cases yes its avoidable, in others its not.
I think I drew 2 in 7 years. The wife drew 2 in 5 years. Both is us drew the first year applying. I don't really even get excited for the draw anymore. So much sheep hunting to do on a HT that is just as good or better. YMMV.
I used to have problems and use the silicone trick. It works pretty well but if you do both sides it's stupid loud squeaking on the tent bottom. I switched to a neoair, no silicone or slipping and sliding since.
Dang man. I can't help much but if you're stressing over killing an animal you are not enjoy the experience. Just trust your knowledge and experience and let the dice roll.
I drew a likely OIL sheep tag here in AK. I hunted for 9 days and didnt get a chance. Saw a couple nice rams but...
Day 10 of 10 hunting. Looked at 2x as much country this year for one FC ram. Usually see a few in half as much country.
Please excuse the lack of "sheep hunter" clothing. 😀
I pack/wear the following, none are really name brand of any sort.
polypro t-shirt + one extra
mid-weight merino long sleeve shirt
light fleece pull-over
light weight puffy vest
puffy jacket with hood
one extra underwear
2x extra socks and liners
fast drying nylon type hiking pants
rain gear top...
Handle the cape like you do meat. Keep it clean, dry, and cool and hang with good air circulation. I would get into the freezer as soon as possible though. If freezing isn't an option before you leave, or once I hit 6-7 days in the field I get nervous and flesh/salt it.
Have your taxi show...
I played with the stats one time assuming applying for all permits available and tossing in a few tickets for random raffles. Even if you assume really low chance of drawing 0.5%+/- your odds of drawing a in 30-40 years is pretty good. Thats also about a $2500+ investment every year, which...
I got a letter from Zach at Tok Air stating that the NPS pulled his permit to fly hunters into the preserve for 2021. I'd especially be worried if I had a sheep hunt booked, because you're now going to be hunting somewhere else, likey with someone else. He'll likely just blame the other...
Thats a tough one... its all personal. Shoot what makes you happy, but consider if you're shooting one just to shoot it or not. Killing one that takes good pictures is a pretty stupid reason to shoot one, IMO. Deer hunting generally isn't that difficult, and passing up a young buck doesn't...
