I gave Chat GPT a simple prompt about a deer hunt in Kansas based on my experience last fall, here's the reply.
In the heart of rural Kansas, November arrives with a crisp chill in the air, signaling the much-anticipated deer hunting season. As a recreational hunter and professional writer, I...
I have a 7mm RM and it's a favorite, a really great rifle and chambering. Still, I like the PRC so I decided to build one. I think the RM is great for most deer hunting (and elk) with bullets in the 150-160 range, it's really hard to beat.
The PRC is in another class with 175s, the high BC...
I'm a big advocate of using range finders, especially when you are hunting somewhere new. When I get to a stand location I've never hunted, I range as many distances as I can to get an idea of the range as it can often be deceiving. This way, I know in advance what my hold should be on a deer...
I suppose that's one way to go about it, to each is own! It seems a waste of effort to me to have all that unburnt power and unused gas just going out the barrel.
I built my 7 PRC at 22" only because it will be suppressed, if not, I would have chosen 24". Still, there is probable not much difference in the muzzle blast at 20" v 22".
My point wasn't about velocity being equal, it was about reasonable efficiency as you stated.
To my way of thinking, it would be a waste of muzzle blast and recoil to have a 20" 30-06, 300 WSM or 300 WM when a 308 could do very well with the same barrel and be much more enjoyable to shoot...
'However, if going to 18" I feel like I'd want a magnum or long action cartridge to try and retain as much velocity as possible"
Actually, I'd go the other direction...magnums need a longer barrel to get the most of all the the gas the large heap of powder is generating. A long action round...
I bought a Harvester EVO last summers and used it hunting last year, I won't hunt without one now. I like it so much I bought two more this spring, will be waiting on them for a bit.
I bought the EVO for several reasons, 1) it works well to reduce noise, 2) it's short and light (6.2", 10.8 oz)...
Having owned magnums up to and including 300 WM, 338 WM and 375 HH, I can tell you that my 6.5 CM is a lot more fun to shoot and for extended sessions. There's a difference between sighting in a magnum kicker for hunting and then putting it in the safe and not firing it again unless at game and...
That's a nice rig, I really don't think you can beat them for a legit 4x4 and off road vehicle with "hard cabin enclosure". I'd like to keep ours and lift it and puts some 33s on it but I have a 4x4 truck and don't really have a place to use it.
You may have a bit of trouble with that scope in mounting, I build mine on the Defiance GA Hunter with integrated pic rail and the scope just barely fit and not ideal. You'll need to pick your rings, put them on the receiver and see how much tube you will need to bridge the gap.
If you scroll up just a bit you'll see my rifle with a McMillan Game Hunter, took 5 weeks direct from McMillan. The "paint only" stocks seem to be a bit faster in line than the carbon and molded in options that some people prefer.
I don't think there is any real definition of "magnum" when it comes to cartridges, it's more of a marketing thing, measuring recoil could be subjective so that's not really accurate. Most magnums had a "belt" on the case but some these days don't, like the 7 and 300 PRCs.
A standard...
We have one, a white 2012, it's a pretty good 4x4 for what it is. I'm 6'4" and it's comfortable to drive, nice riding vehicle. The back seat is small but ok for occasional use, the rear has a good bit of room and there's always the roof rack. The Mrs got a new car last week, trying to...
The 6.5 PRC is a "medium action" it has it's own unique length, performance very much like the 270 Winchester. The 7 PRC is an entirely difference class of cartridge, larger, more powder, more recoil and designed for heavy, high BC bullets like 175s and 180s. The 7 PRC is more comparable to...
Tikka for sure, they have a great reputation. As far as chambering, I have both the 6.5 CM and 308 (as well as others) and both offer available and affordable ammo. I find the 6.5 CM to be more fun to shoot as it has less recoil but the 308 is fine too. Pressed, I'd recommend the 6.5 CM for...
My son has a Ford Maverick that gets 38 highway mpg, it's a very nice little truck. He left town this week with a 11' jon boat in the back, no problem. My 2020 Chevy Silverado 4x4 2.7 has gotten as much as 26 mpg on the highway, more typical loaded for hunting about 23-24.
If you consider that the 30-06 was released in 1906 and is still the king (all things considered), it's hard to make the argument that cartridge development has changed much in 100+ years. New cartridges are just little tweaks of existing ideas and I'm not complaining.
Case in point, I just...
