Which is even more saddening with the amount of backcountry and hard to hunt country we possess, these deer are not struggling due to hunters in any sense.
Idahoans are so spoiled and simply don’t understand how bad it’d suck to have 7 day seasons, limited to one small unit which you can hunt once every 3 years.
Especially, when the same unit they complain about has the potential for 170+ bucks every year, even with the “pressure.”
I truthfully cannot see how Idaho guys (I’m one) can put any blame on non-res, they’re limited in #’s and have terrible success rates, each non-res I talk to is struggling other than an occasional lucky guy.
Also,
Important note, units 48/49 are being developed like crazy and have become the...
I agree, especially with predators in states like California, Oregon, Washington- I think they’re the main limiting factor, especially the mountain lion populations.
In Idaho, it’s gotta be the opportunity to hunt long seasons and have pretty aggressive predator compared to other western states.
IDFG promotes wolf trapping and cat hunting, which is more than I can say for the other PNW states.
Plus, I can hunt with firearms otc from Aug.30-Nov.31 across...
Far and wide, hunters aren’t effecting the numbers of any units, we have minimal impact on herd #’s. Limiting tags won’t create/improve winter range, or cause rain etc.
Taking away opportunities from residents or nr’s may only improve big buck #’s, but how many guys want to only hunt once every...
For me, I’d say about 5 deep and 3000 + feet of elevation gain/loss for a deer. I regularly hiked in pretty deep this season and didn’t struggle.
For elk I wouldn’t do more than 3 miles from a road, I hunt solo or with one person, I’m not doing 5 trips deep lol.
My packs have a full water...
I purpose left out the rocky terrain to avoid landmarks, but when I say dangerous, I mean dangerous!
I was seriously worried for my dads health and probably won’t take him back there. 45 degree slopes with 15 foot cliffs and slick/snowy boulders everywhere.
10/27- my Dad, Brother and I set out for steep and physical day hunt. Probably the last one before my brother enlists in the military.
We began hiking at 5:05 AM and gained 2100 feet of vertical in 1.1 miles then trekked another 2 miles west.
Immediately, we spot a couple does and a nice buck...
That blue mountain study about elk calves was insane- 14 percent survival and 68 percent of deaths from Cougars 😳 Washington has got to get it together!
Interestingly, through pictures from multiple generations I’ve seen areas where the same exact inline genetics have been passed from buck to buck.
I’d say the 3x3 will maybe develop some nasty bases or a small kicker with age- but it seems like a non-typical is mostly dictated by strong genetics.
I believe a mix of genetics, age and nutrition simply for the development of the extras.
I can’t remember where I heard this but I believe the number of B&C non-typical’s hasn’t taken quite the hit that typical’s have because they’ve always been rare and require very mature bucks.
But genetics...
