I’ve hunted that unit but never fossil ridge. Looks to very timbered country is why I stayed away. Also that’s pretty late in the yr to be hunting wilderness high country. -

Man just go! Nothing but air and opportunity to go! U could draw a mulie tag in CO or WY w zero points. U could do a OTC hunt in AZ archery or u could draw a tag in NM fairly easy. Endless opportunities -

Colorado Elk 66 - archery
I hunted right next door in 67 first rifle last yr. We had a good hunt. Similar unit but I’d give 66 the nod from what I hear. I don’t think u could go wrong w that unit for archery w 7 pts. Not much u can draw beyond 5-7 pts anyway until u get to 20+ pts. I’m speaking for elk. Not sure I’d try... -

I’d agree w 5ft! I don’t really have an issue w shooting at 800 yds but I don’t understand the logic in not letting the deer stand up and at least be broadside at that kinda distance -

Muzzleloader for Elk
Well u know u have to shoot conicals but I’m pretty sure the federal bor lock is legal as well. If it shoots well for you I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for elk. I shot hornsdy pbts I think was the name of them? They shot good. Lots of folks love the Thor bullet too. -

Colorado unit 79 & 68 archery
My advice is to maybe pick a few units and plan on checking all them out this fall if u had time. I was kinda planning on this myself. Maybe take 2 weeks and hunt several units and just kinda get a feel for the future -

Never hunted the units but my research on 68 is that it has a fairly low population of elk that has decreased. Terrain looks not overly steep on GE. Lots of beetle kill from what I can tell which could be good w some feed. I like that it has a mix of open terrain and timber. Just not sure it... -

No I’m on the same page about having enough time. I always plan my elk hunts for 2 weeks at time. When I first started I tried just going a week which isn’t enough time. I guess I really meant I didn’t need a whole archery month and then another month for rifle. I was kinda thinking maybe... -

Yes every tag is potentially a dead elk but NM, CO and even AZ uses that strategy w late season high tag numbers and they have a much less population of elk than WY. With shorter seasons the success rate would go down and more ppl would get thru the system is all I’m saying and overall success... -

I don’t disagree. I usually try and draw any tag I can anywhere. And I’ve had enough pts for 3 yrs in WY to draw but it keeps creeping and I’ve been very unlucky there in that I’m always been in the point pool that draws but I’m one of the I’m def not a trophy hunter at all! And I never apply... -

If I can ever draw a tag I will gladly get outta your way in WY! It has been very frustrating w point creep. I’m pretty up to speed on most states and their draw systems and there has been no other state that has experienced as much point creep as WY in recent yrs. not even close -

Well if the trend follows other states there will be no pullouts or withdrawals. Every single state since Covid had an increase in applicants this yr. NM, CO and NV all saw increase in applicants. Now I can’t figure that out but it is a fact. I woulda thought the opposite but it didn’t happen
