I have a Glock 20 but carry my Buckmark ten times more often. Where I live, I'm more likely to encounter grouse than grizzly.
I know it's not an ideal self defense round, but 10 rounds of .22lr isn't totally negligible when negotiating with a meth head.
I'm personally not a fan of quick clot because I've been told tissue that it comes in contact with kind of cures up and a large amount eventually needs to be cut away. The last wilderness first responder course I took said to just use a lot of gauze.
I don't carry a tourniquet on foot, but...
Like others have said, access and snow are pretty unpredictable. Make sure to have a few back-up areas in mind. I've been in 20A in early May a bad snow year. It was not at all efficient to leave the immediate river cooridor.
The outer layer freaks me the hell out. Once I remove it, dispose of it, and manage to stop thinking about it, the rest of the tongue meat is excellent.
Bear spray will still spray below freezing, but it will not spray as far.
When I worked in Polar Bear country everyone just carried their bear spray under one layer of coat. Even carrying it in a chest holster rather than on your hip does a lot to keep it warm.
What I worry about more than...
I've never hunted with a guide, but I have done a few fly-in trips where a small plane just dropped me off on a beach or backcountry airstrip.
Is it customary to tip a charter pilot for a point A to point B trip? The thought honestly never crossed my mind and I'm kind of cringing thinking...
How are you guys bringing your bows along on these long stalks? I used to use a longbow but switched to a compound last year. The split limbs, cams, and extra strings are all sagebrush magnets.
I have 10 ply tires on a 2001 ranger and a 2nd gen tacoma. Its kind of silly to have such heavy tires on such small trucks, but most of my driving is for work on jagged lava rock roads.
I wouldn't recommend Ten ply tires unless you live somewhere where you need the sidewall protection, or have...
If you are getting a rifle with elk and pronghorn in mind, I would suggest putting together an ideal elk rifle with the confidence that whatever you choose will do a great job on pronghorn as well.
I shot a spring bear while it was eating skunk cabbage. I was a little worried about skunky tasting meat, but it turned out to be a non issue. The spring meat had kind of a plant matter taste, but in a good way. Kind of like celery and walnuts.
SW Idaho looks like a straight to DVD sci fi movie.
I usually don't have any breathing problems but working a physical job outside all day has me hacking and coughing every morning.
It sucks that I'm destroying my lungs but I don't even get to look cool while doing it.
You generally can't just waltz into being a Western state CO.
IDFG wants officers to have degrees in wildlife biology or criminal justice. A lot of the officers have degrees in both. A few even have Master's degrees.
There's a preference for hiring younger officers because this state is damn...
I spent $80 on a couple pairs of superfeet before just going to a podiatrist and getting some custom carbon insoles made. I think they were two or three hundred dollars, but they are supposed to last a decade and only need a 90 dollar reconditioning every year or two. Between work and fun, I...
I used the same thermarest from 5th grade spacecamp until I turned 28. Then I bought an Xthem and put about a hundred nights on it since then.
Thermarest should honor their warranty, and their stuff is usually very high quality. You may have just been particularly unlucky.
I was going to make this same analogy. Honda ATVs and Toyota trucks are both too small for me, but I own both because I am a cheap joyless reliability chaser. If work is providing the ride and the repairs I'm happiest in a Ford or on a big old Polaris.
I really envy people who excel at one specific thing but I'm just not wired to be that way.
I'm destined to always be bad to average at a constantly growing list of activities.
