Elk with a Savage slug gun

Love my 220 but I don’t think they make the 20ga Accutips anymore which has always been my round of choice. Luckily I have a few boxes saved up but it’s an awesome gun.

    CO 45 2nd rifle

There’s maybe 4 areas in the entire unit of 45 that you can glass and you can’t get to them unless you want to climb like 2500’ up a rock wall. I think people truly underestimate the unit. It’s steep, dark timber, and covered in blowdown. It will take you HOURS to get anywhere and when you do...

    Go in deep!

My wife would kill me if I ground up the rear quarters of anything lol. Best crockpot sandwiches you’ll ever have are from rear quarters lol.

    Experience with Crispi

Zero issues on my Thor II other than the wet grass with no gaitors. Even then they were just damp at the top. I did use the waterproofing spray on mine though.

    Backcountry hunt pack weight

Weighed in today at 21lbs no food/water. Only thing missing out of that is 20oz in rain gear if I take it and maybe a Kiln hoodie for an extra mid layer if it’s going to be cold. That was without a lid but I think I might just take the weight penalty and carry it purely for the organizational...

    New Record! Colorado elk…

I think we are at or near the peak of the influx. I think at some point within the next decade tag applications will be on the decline from the current high. So many things happened at once to create a perfect storm. GPS maps on your phone, services that tell you exactly what unit to apply for...

What do y’all do when the elk are just too high up?

I’m not sure where you were, but if you had 2000’ of elevation above you this early in the season I would say you’re hunting too low. If you don’t want to go that high either move to an area where your elevation is the upper limit or be willing to go up there. They won’t have any reason to come...

What's the deal with Klymit warmth ratings?

Used the insulated static V last season. Never got cold but it’s not a comfortable bad compared to other designs. It’s just too thin for a side sleeper. The only reason I haven’t sold mine is it’s my back up in the truck now.

Group Hunting…. Who gets to shoot?

For archery we decided to alternate days but it was decided that we were both ready just in case the first guy didn’t have an angle.

    Lids. WTF

Another vote for the Metcalf lid isn’t a lid. The one they have on the 2023 Popup 40 looks awesome though. I want to see if they’ll sell it separately if it fits the Metcalf.

What public land in a state/ area would you like to hunt?

A crappy hunt with a good buddy is a good hunt in my book lol.

What public land in a state/ area would you like to hunt?

Texas is ruined for me simply because of what they have basically marketed as touristy “exotic” game hunting for glorified pets. I know there are places in Texas that aren’t like that, but it just ruins the allure of going there for me. Now you sign me up for a helicopter hog hunt and I’d hop...

    Pack weight for broke newbie

Damn I just got called poor and stupid in the same sentence haha. Very accurate though. The vast majority of my weight was stuff I didn’t even need. “Packing my fears.” My two comfort items are an extra pillow and a titanium coffee mug because I would die without my morning coffee lol.

    Pack weight for broke newbie

Older thread and you’re probably already set for this season but here is some last second advice…if you can’t get under 40lbs with the set up you have, I wouldn’t carry it all day. Do a spike camp and lose all that extra weight that you don’t need for the day. I’m not sure where you’re hunting...

Have you ever gone too light?

Last year for me was a crappy pillow 100%. Slept like crap and had an awful neck ache for a week. I’m debating actually taking 2 this year because I’m bouncing back from my second neck injury and I’d rather carry the weight than deal with soreness for my whole trip. My two investments this...

How much does your spike camp pack weigh?

Jeeze man. I couldn’t get that much food down without feeling like a sloth lol. I’m also not a large human (5’8” 160), so I’m pretty content at right around 2000cal/day. I usually just munch on bars or something throughout the day and eat a bag meal in the evening. Around 20oz weight per day.
