What is all the deadfall from? I read the fire in the wilderness just burned the leaf litter but I am seeing swaths of hillsides completely killed off. I have a trip planned up there this year and after looking at the map closely I think some of the areas I was interested in may be out of the...
If I have to boil it down it would be take the trail, then zig zags, then circles.
But the type of animal, shot placement, terrain and other circumstances dictate a lot of what the animal (and I) will likely do.
Personally I would go with a 26-28’ max with a couple slides for a bumper pull and 1/2 ton. Anything bigger I am going 5th wheel/diesel and these days I can’t see the practicality in that for a few weekends a year.
100%
I have run the Falken At3 and the MT and both are horrific at <40% tread. Even if they were still cheaper than the other big name tires I would not run them again and certainly won’t pay as much or more than the other options.
I am with you. I run no pack as often as possible. I would rather burn back a mile or so, drop my gear and grab my pack if I kill. For day hunts when I need a pack, I use a Slumberjack 2500. Then I also have a Kuiu 7800 if I need to pack in multiple days or if I think the pack out will be tough...
Think of it not as teaching the dog to fetch, but teaching the dog that it cannot, not fetch. Consider the ethics here when the dog’s job is to retrieve game that you may be physically unable to. If the dog decides he won’t go, if you have this foundation of fetch training (which gets overlayed...
Do you care that hunting rights and conservation practices were put into place hundreds of years ago, so that you and I are able to hunt today?
Because it sounds like you do not appreciate it at all, nor those who fought to save it.
I don’t know how old you are and what you have witnessed in...
It’s worth it IMO. Getting a good dog, from good lines, with good health and good instincts will put you 10,000 miles ahead of (most) $500 dogs especially for your first and even more so if you are training yourself. Like others have said that extra $500-600 you spent initially is a drop in the...
Nice job.
Definitely my favorite way to hunt. I usually kill a buck or two each year that way, but treestand hunting is so easy and effective in most situations I generally spend more time doing that. But this year I am specifically hunting places where still hunting will be a better option...
Really the only way I have heard of buck numbers affecting population is if the ratio was so bad that all the does couldn’t be bred in an appropriate time for optimal fawn drop whether that be time of season or timing for predator swamping.
Sounds like they have already been cutting buck...
Fantastic post.
One huge issue though that I see with relying on newer and younger hunters is that unless they come from a generational hunting family or have a mentor who takes the time to explain as you have in this post, what the history is locally, they generally, by default, have no clue...
Seriously, after looking at the great carcass shot placement pic that @Theringworm posted, that is exactly where I would subconsciously put my pin/crosshairs. But all this middle of middle talk would have made me consciously shoot a little further back…
Glad I asked. Thanks for the replies. 👍
I have an e-bike and I wish they were legally kept to motorized or at least designated trails and firebreaks where I hunt. I can ride my e-bike all through the woods off trail in a way that is not practical and probably not even physically possible with a mountain bike. I can tell you first...
