    Getting Deer In the Truck?

If you already have an ATV ramp, I just throw that in the back of the truck, and if I am lucky enough to get one out whole, I just pull it right up the ramp into the truck.

Son drew National Elk Refuge permit this weekend!

Last week, the elk weren't coming down quite yet, but there's snow on the menu for this weekend. Last year, I saw some local kids with that tag that shot some HUGE bulls. Like high 300's. Some phone calls to G&F would probably help you feel it out.

    Stone Glacier SKY 5900 Concerns

I asked the same question when considering a 5900 or 6900. What zap said is spot on. I went 6900. The bigger pack will just have a little bit more fabric that you can tuck away and never know it's there until you need it. My 6900 functions most of the time as a perfect day or overnight pack...

6.5 Creedmoor/260 for Deer, Elk, and whatever else.....

I've used them and been happy with their performance. I once shot a buck at 80 yards with a 7mm SST going 3000 fps and hit spine. It exploded on impact leaving about an 8" hole, and I was picking pieces of lead out of what remained of the back straps. They work, just don't shoot the spine...

    Aram Von Benedikt

I didn't feel like I could contribute until I caught up on this thread, but I'll try to take it easy after this one.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Any luck taking any animals with the 69 TMK? I'm considering hunting with a rifle that also has the 1-9 twist, and would like to know if performance is comparable.

Shooting From Trekking Poles. Have you used Quick-Stix adapters?

When I'm in an area where I might run into game at any time and the shooting will be 100 yards or more, I also hook my quickstix together while still hunting so I'm ready to go. I've used them on 2 elk this year, both sitting at 250 yards. The first, I was set up beforehand and would have had...

    Which scope

I was always happy with Leupold. I've killed a lot of critters with them and Nikon. I did have a Lepold VX-II that shifted zero when I had it strapped on the front of a 4 wheeler on a bouncy trail. I just figured that's what scopes do, so I re-zeroed and always sling it on my back now. I...

The internet has broken the boundaries between upper/mid/lower class.

My wife broke the boundary for me between what we'll call lower middle and upper middle class. She helped me see that there's more out there that I can shoot for than a career with retirement, social security, and a 30 year mortgage. Rokslide on the other hand is a completely different...

    My goat packing experiment

That seems accurate. Maybe fewer if you shoot a smaller elk or are willing to do some of the heavy lifting. My mature cow was 190 lbs bone in with hide on the hinds (I carried those) if you debone and piece it all out for goats I bet you're around 155 lbs. That would be doable with 3 full...

    My goat packing experiment

I did load up my goat in the best shape a little heavier than I maybe should have at 40 lbs, but the other two had 20 of meat, and camp at 10-12 lbs. That was just for a 2 1/2 mile pack out.

    My goat packing experiment

My 3 year olds have been doing some packing with lighter loads and have been doing great. Yesterday was the first time they got to help pack something out rather than just packing camp in. They still got lighter loads, but it was nice to have someone else pack out the the loose meat and...

2023 OFFICIAL ELK MEAT POLE THREAD

After being out quite a few times and not making it happen with my bow (my fault, not the elk's), and not being able to pin down a bull with my early rifle tag, it was time to put some meat in the freezer. The elk knew that the general season opens tomorrow and were pretty hard to come by, so...
