How much hunting does your wife let you get by with?

TLDR: talk to your partner early and often I find that communication is key. I don't look at this as a transactional agreement (i.e I give you 300 nights, I get 65 nights in return). This is a partnership and we have to work together to ensure that our alone interests and our common interests...

Mobile truck tool box/tote? What are the essentials?

Here is what is in the overland Burb at all times. I use a large soft tote for all this. This list will flex depending on season and location. Bottled water a couple shelf stable energy bars A collapsible rubber bowl (for the pupper) TP FAK Folding Army E-Tool Traction planks Tow strap Rubber...

What is your go-to ready-to-eat food in the field?

I am with you on the dehydrated fruits, esp. pineapple. Not a big trail mix fan myself. I've heard of guys who pack just the powdered cheese packets from kraft mac or hamburger helper and just swish with some water afterwards....don't think I'm quite that hard core.

What is your go-to ready-to-eat food in the field?

Hey ya'll . What are all you all eating in the back country that is prepackaged and ready to go? For those of us who are packing food in and not getting camp meat or going back to the hotel, what's for dinner? I'm talking bars, freeze-dried meals, pre-prepped meals, shelf stable rations, etc...

    Savage R93 17

I have had the bull barrel version with black sporter stock since I was 17, so nearly 15 years. I put a junky sling on it, a trashy used Tasco 3-9x32 that might be older than me, and a walmart harris-like bipod and left it like that. I would venture to say I have killed hundreds of squirrels and...

    What’s your ideal hunting truck?

Exactly. I had a 2020 Jeep Gladiator and then couldn't work on it with all the electronics and proprietary jeep stuff. the fording depth is also incredibly low, even with a snorkel, due to the location of the PCM. I was always worried about scratching it, or people breaking into it. Sold the...

    What’s your ideal hunting truck?

yup. Everyone running 265, 285 or 305mm wide knobby tires acting like they have the ultimate off road machine just end up spinning and floating in snow. In ice or rainy conditions, its down right dangerous to run a wide, M/T tread pattern.

    What’s your ideal hunting truck?

I have a absorbent cargo liner I throw in the back of the Burb. I have put many deer in the back. No blood on my carpets. I also have rubber floor mats on all the floors that I hose/brush out regularly. Put three pigs, 3 rams, and 2 other unwashed dudes in the back barely a month ago and drove...

    What’s your ideal hunting truck?

I've had a myriad of gassers and Diesels. Even had a launch edition Gladiator. All had their pluses and minuses. I hate running Diesels in the winter. They are hard to start, take forever to warm up, and honestly the cold weather affects the compression cycle and puts additional wear on the...

    Good books????

Edmund Morris' biographies on Theodore Roosevelt, specifically The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Colonel Roosevelt capture Teddy's time out west at the end of the Western era, his time in Cuba during the Spanish American War and then his 1909 Safari really well.

Warm Weather Boots. What do you guys run?

I run the Salomans Ultra 3 as well, but if I need a higher boot I go with my Rocky S2Vs. Durable, comfortable, and light enough. I always wear Darn Tough 100% Merino Wool socks, regardless of the weather. This is also key.

    Moose Caliber: Maine

As a lever gun lover, I hate to say this, but if that is factory Remington brand 405 Grain 45-70 I would not use that on a moose. The factory 405 grain loads are notoriously underpowered so they can be safely chambered in trapdoor Springfields and other period single shots. If those are hot...

If you were to buy a timber gun…

If I was choosing an all-around timber gun for everything on the western hemisphere I would go with the Remington 673 in 350 Rem Mag. If I couldn't get that, then it would be a Browning BLR '81 in 358 or 30'06. All of those options would get a a 1-6 or 2.5-8x32 Leupold.

Balancing FOV/what power to shoot on game

I had a real nice 3-15x power scope with a cool drop calculator/compensator and turrets on my main rifle for a couple of years because I thought I needed the magnification and drop compensator to reach out and make an ethical shot. Until I went through my hunting journal and realized almost ALL...

    Timber Rifle for Elk...what one?

You'd be really cool if you got a Remington 673 in 350 Rem Mag. I hear that is the cat's pajamas for up close elk in the timbers and thickets.
