Probably because 2022 is mostly, if not all booked up or reserved by now. I locked up a hunt for 2022 earlier this year and most spots were already sewn up. Covid restrictions and lockdowns last year, and the word getting out on DIY Caribou via AK, has increased demand like crazy.
I think the earlier the better meat from bulls. Caribou meat is excellent, and I'm sure there would be debate on which is better. Ive had both and like them both, I found my caribou from late August was better and more tender than elk I've had. Allegedly, the closer to the rut you get, the meat...
Yep, and most places on the slope, you will be crossing braided streams and drainage where you'll need more than boots and gaiters.

Took a pair of meindl with me last time, and ended up living in hip boots. If you can stay on gravel, you'll be ok with good boots and gaiters, otherwise get an ankle fit pair of hip boots. The pic.....those that know, know! Lol

Look to the south end, it seems to fair better with the winter kill situation on Kodiak. West side got hit hard season before last. I'd think about taking a .22 take down of some sort perhaps, there are fox everywhere and have beautiful coats. Our group took several fox and had wished we had...
I'd do November. We just did last week of October and would have loved to push it into November but couldn't due to scheduling. Towards the end of the week, deer really started to move and come down from elevation. I'd think 4 guys in a camp would be just fine and alot of fun.

I'll echo this statement. We were across the bay over at Zachar Bay, and the hunting was tough. Winter kill in that area had to be in the neighborhood of 60% or even higher. The lodge was great and hospitality and fishing were outstanding and we would like to go back, but it will be a few...
Tough hunt, 50-70 % deer loss at Zachar Bay. We found 30 skeletons in one low spot near the beach. We ended up taking 5 doe and only 1 buck. Had a great time and fishing was super, but was a little disappointed with the deer hunting.

There isn't much to burn up there, willow can be had in drainage or near lake edges, but not substantial pieces. Small, quick burn warming fires are about as much as you can hope for. We gathered pieces for a few days to have enough for 1 fire 1 evening.

Having spent 10 days in the arctic end of August and 7 days on Kodiak end of October, the ability to dry out comes into sharp focus. This year, our first full day in Kodiak was a torrent of rain with rain most other days following. The arctic it rains every day in some form.
I worry about...
