for those inquiring, yes, this hunt was on 100% public lands. DIY, no guide as all my hunts, adventures are.
back in the late 60's, early 1970's, I hunted a public land area of Snoqualmie, near town of Fall City, in WA State.
Couple nice lakes, several beaver ponds, creeks with the main Snoqualmie river below in the valley. Hiked onto a vista, could view Snoqualmie Falls from 1+ mile away.
At that...
Over the years, 50 of them, I've shot bull elk with 270, 308, 30-06 and 300WM.
all get the job done with good shot placement.
But the 300 Winchester Magnum, 200 Gr Partition, and observing the results....DEVASTATING!!
Never had a bull go more than 50 yards and most dropped in their tracks.
The...
Wishing you good luck in unit 13 for late archery elk. That is a very tough hunt.

Arizona OTC archery mule deer hunt, span of 15 days in December 2020. All on public BLM, FED, AZ state lands.
After several blown stalks on 5 different bucks, finally a plan is successful.
Imagine, buck fever at age 63! But got control, subdued the nerves, shaking hands & trembling knees in...
To your direct question, not your recent circumstance.
For me, depends on what sign found at the shot location, how sure of shot placement and what I HEAR after the shot. I often see bucks and sometimes bulls drop within eyesight.
Late in the day & hunting solo, if blood is bright color...
This happened to my best bud in AZ just three years ago. Early archery unit 10 draw tag. After 18 years to draw, my friend decided to spend $7500 to book a top guide. Not an easy decision for his finances.
4th day of hunt, Guide calls in 7x6. The big bull is working into them...
not surprised, this was bound to happen.
2 years ago, muzzie hunter aimed at me in unit 62. Guess my bugle, grunting in the timber was too convincing.
heard a stick snap behind me, turned around and there was the muzzie hunter 50 yards away, his ML pointed at me.
now I hunt before or after...
allow yourself more time, more days for the hunt.
5 days of hunt time isn't much, especially if you need to acclimate to the high elevation and thin air.
per your earlier question...
I move my processed/bagged elk meat, rear, front quarters, trim meat to an area at least 400 yards away from carcass remains. Hang as high in the trees as possible and upwind then 90deg cross wind of the boned skeleton. Envision a -L- path.
Move bull head to another...
I am retired now...don't regret the decision at all. Financially stable so no worries there.
To be honest, having so much fun & enjoyment by hunting, fishing, camping, scouting, YouTubing, traveling and yes>>>golfing! But always golfed a lot anyways as my GHIN is a +1.2, still scoring around par...
South & SE of Panguitch Lake gets most of my attention.
The high elevation country, basins but I'm hunting general archery. Lots of does low near the forest areas, hills surrounding the lake. And I see few elk, very few elk when archery deer hunting.
the trout fishing isn't bad either come fall.
this works for me too.
Used this strategy a few times when solo. And most of my shots are short distance with the bull looking toward direction from where I had called.
hmmm, 10 miles per day in game country.
In areas/states that I hunt, scouting maybe. And that is usually only 5-7 miles RT with good planning, optics.
Hunting...never, my old legs couldn't take that day after day.
Once camped, base or spike, if you're covering 10 miles per day, you're walking...
