    I'm wondering how older preHD alpha glass might compare to the new $1k offerings by Zeiss, Maven, Kowa, etc. Would less expensive binos built with new technology surpass the best optics of old? I didn't see where this specific question has been asked before and have wondered about this myself.

    The silver fox is quite likely once in a lifetime. Lynx numbers rise and fall with the snowshoe hare population that peaks every 7 years. Lots of hares means lots of lynx. Yes, they sneak in and can be very tough to spot, not charging in like a canine.
