Well, I am a Tikka guy 😃 but I like the look and feel of a wood handled axe. I'll take the cold steel and strip the paint off the head and remove the varnish from the handle and give it a tung oil finish and make it look less 'mass produced'.
Well, shades of heresy, but the Cold steel Trail Boss was half off on Amazon so I picked one up for $25. I'll see how it is. I'm thinking of the Husqvarna multi purpose axe or the Council Tools wood craft axe if the CS doesn't work out. Thanks for the good info and recommendations.
Needing a camp axe for limbing trees, splitting wood for the stove, general camp duties and warding off the occasional marauding griz. I definitely prefer a wood handle. Any particular makes or models you recommend? And what size/length do you prefer for those applications?
I shot my moose this year with my Tikka 300wm. It shoots the 180 grain Barnes like a laser. Although it was only 135 yds, the bullet performed perfectly. 180 grains is definitely not overkill on a moose. My shot was quartering to and went through the inside of the front shoulder, then through...
Gonna resurrect this one. I have found a small trappers companion hawk pretty handy in the woods. Pretty compact and lightweight and enough to clear brush, split kinding, make tent stakes and pound them. I've also taken a liking to a mini parang which is a smaller and shorter than most machetes...
Well said roymunson. Things don't always go according to plan and a little extra insurance is a good thing. It sure is a bummer to have a moose lumber off and die in a water hole, or worse yet, a swift moving river.
My 270 has taken two Alaskan moose, both with 150 grain Nosler Partitions. One was a close shot, approx 50 yds frontal on a small spike/fork. He spun and ran 20 yds and went down.
The other was a 40+ incher, about 225 yds, hit him quartering and the bullet went in through the front quarter...
