I know on the bird forum there is a debate that the Nikon ED50 with fixed eyepieces can hold its own against the Kowa 554
love to see a side by side with the swaro
another Vote for 10x42 on a tripod to extend your views
I really enjoyed my Nikon monarch 7, Maven C1, and Kowa BD2….don’t think you can go wrong with any of them
Sig Romeo 5 if your on a budget. It has a great reputation for reliability. Alabama arsenal did a torture test and even shot the thing with a shotgun. Even then the red dot still turned on
if you have the money, aimpoint has the best glass and reliability …but I do love my Romeo!
yes, they are called prisms….primary arms has some lightweight ones (under 6-7 ounces)
but you don’t want magnification for low light, you want a bigger aperture in whatever scope you choose
General rule of thumb that works for me is 1x for each hundred yards for an ACCURATE shot and 2x for each hundred yards for a PRECISION shot…..with that said you don’t need precision for hunting. I always rather have lower magnification and higher FOV. Plus you get more shakes with higher...
using a six o'clock hold with a 2 MOA dot really Increases accuracy, instead of just placing the dot over the deer. You can also increase your accuracy distance if you use a rear peep sight or a magnifier
As a general rule of thumb I can shoot slightly further with red dots over iron sights...
warning: the lightweight and nimbleness of a red dot equipped mountain rifle becomes very addictive
P.S. You can still have magnification if you go with a prism
Have you considered a red dot or a prism?
they balance out a mountain rifle very nicely since they weigh nothing. you can get red dots that only weigh 1 ounce or a magnified 3x prism for 6-7 ounces
Absolutely…mirages make you dial down magnification ….sometimes to 20x or lower…at that point you might as well use the brighter more comfortable binoculars
