    Down vs Synthetic Sleeping Bags

Yep. Exactly. Well cared for down lasts a very long time, with relatively minimal performance degradation. It has 2 negatives vs syn- cost and moisture handling. Both can be mitigated.

    Reco some trekking poles

Myself and buds have had long-term good service from Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Corks. Kinda pricy now tho.

    Tract Toric 8x42/10x42: Great Value?

I’ve used the Tract 8x, 10x and 15x. They’re very good binos, especially for the price. I’ll probably get one of the 10x42 in the near future. Mostly to drop weight from my current main bino.

Pressure signs, do I have any?

Agreed. Since most of us don’t have labs with pressure testing equipment, velocity is our most reliable ‘pressure sign’.

Japan made Burris Signature HD latest model selling for $207 on Amazon

A buddy and I grabbed some 8x42s when they were on for $187. They’re quite good for the Amazon blowout prices. Really good resolution, but a rather narrow FoV. I used mine last weekend on a bear hunt, and compared them to a bunch of other 8x42s. They’ll make a great truck bino. I don’t have...

Merino or Synthetic for archery elk.

My KUIU Merino is early production, so they may/probably have improved it- but mine gets a funky wet dog smell when really wet. I like it fine otherwise. Tho, I feel like the KUIU stuff isn’t a great value proposition. The $20 Costco Made In Canada 100% merino is more my speed these days.

Merino or Synthetic for archery elk.

Wool. 100%. But not KUIU. Haha. Synthetic may dry quicker, but stinks almost the instant I put it on. And I’m not interested in wearing the chemical treated no-stink synthetic. In the end, everything is a trade-off. It’ll depend on your personal priority rankings.

    6.5cm 147 Eld-m or 130 TMK

Yeah. But really, It’s not even that the 147ELD has been all that destructive. At least at CM velocities. Just more than my preferred mono, the 127LRX. Which I limit to 350-400M. But everyone has to rank their own priorities. I’m pretty upset if I ruin a shoulder- we love slow cooker shoulder...

    6.5cm 147 Eld-m or 130 TMK

Myself and buds have killed a fair sample size with the 147ELD. Several elk, MD and WT, as well as antelope. It’s worked well at all ranges used, and exits more often than not. In fact, I hadn’t caught any until last season- 2 in the same elk @ 591M. It’s a great projectile, slips wind like few...

    6CM clickers

Yep. The only time I’ve had clickers was with used brass. SB die helped, but didn’t cure it. New Alpha brass for that rifle and the problem went away. The used brass and over pressure load aren’t a great combo. The barrel/chamber are probably fine. OP, I didn’t see it mentioned, do you know...

What has actually quit on you in the field?

Is this thread for firearms failures, or all gear failures? “All gear” makes for a much longer list… -had a M7oo factory trigger start to randomly fire. Trashed it and installed a Timney. -my hunting buddy’s Kimber Montana trigger froze up. Wouldn’t catch the sear and cock. -40C temps for...

    Tikka aftermarket stock

The Wildcats are very light and stiff. And a great value if you can finish it yourself. The comb on Stuart’s sporter Tikka stock is just slightly higher and straighter than the Tikka factory stock. The grip is slightly fuller and more vertical. I still like a stockpack to get ideal cheekweld on...

How can I like the taste of venison

This. Alternatively… cook it more. A lot more. Slow cooker shoulder roasts, shanks, and neck roasts will change how you butcher and cook. It’s what we feed guests who aren’t game meat eaters but want to try it, and so far, everyone has loved the meals. Pressure canning is another great way...

Any way you all found to get the rubber taste out of water bladder

Maybe try a different bladder. Like Source Tactical. No bad taste and very durable. With an inline Sawyer or Rapid Pure, they’ve become our go to. I quit the bad tasting hydration bladders a long time ago. Not worth the hassle when there are other options out there.

Stone Glacier Avail for smaller bodies

I have the Avail and agree with Elkslayer. Can’t see it being a load hauler, even for shorter people. Its a great day or EDC pack though. And works as carryon for flying. ETA; mine has adjustable/removable shoulder straps and belt tho. Was there a design change in the Avail suspension at some...

    Stockys tikka stock

A buddy had one of their early production stocks. Other than really tight inletting, it seemed nice enough. Im happy shooting traditional spotter grips or vertical- really don’t care either way- but the grip on these seemed setup in such a way that it felt like a bit of a reach to the trigger...

Can holdover be more accurate than dialing in a hunting scope?

This simply isn’t the case at all. When SWFA actually had stock, we brought many of them up. Thru the proper channels. It takes a little more time and money, but can be done. Also, Trij, NF, Bushy Elite Tac, Burris XTR- and probably a few others I’m forgetting- are readily available north of...

Who here hunts with AICS mags in a bolt action

I have one ‘hunting rifle’ set up for AI magazines. APA M5 RTG bottom metal, combined with the MDT poly 3-rounders, is the way I use it most. The metal 5 to 12 round mags just get in the way and are more than needed for my hunting. The only downside to the poly MDTs is their relatively short OAL.

Long range shooting challenge from Backfire

Good point. I’ve been squadded with former/current LEO/Mil snipers at a few PR comps. There have been a few who’re very good shots under pressure. But most don’t finish very high in the standings.

Long range shooting challenge from Backfire

For sure. Lots of areas to improve his shooting fundamentals. He flinched like crazy too. But hey, my fundamentals would probably fall to pieces shooting a 7.5-8 pound 300WM that much. That’s why I don’t even own one. A guy has to know his limitations. Mr Marine clearly doesn’t. Unfortunately...
