    Light but tough backpacking tents

Carry your sleeping bag in a waterproof compression sack and you wont have to worry about falling in a creek again. Get a down bag for weight savings, packed size, and longevity. I'd also make sure you are getting a certified r-value mat, last I checked Klymit is not doing that. Look at mats...

    Pad, Cot, or Air mattress?

For a base camp/truck camp scenario, I'd go cot with a mat on top. EXPED introduced the DeepSleep line which is a 7.5cm thick budget series MegaMat. R-value of 8.5 so it'll be great for any season you use it in and come in size Medium (72x20) startin at $149. I'd guess you could buy a cot for...

    Which Budget Bag

An update to my ealier post, the R-Value used to achieve the comfort rating of an EN rated bag is 4.8. I spoke with our mat developer this morning who assisted in also creating the standard for the industry over the past few years. Therm-a-rest and EXPED both had the best outcomes from the...

    Which Budget Bag

Also remember your sleeping pad is just as important. EN ratings are achieved with 4-season mats, REI states 5.5, but I've also heard 4.8 is the standard just earlier this year.

    MR Metcalf or Beartooth 80

Fully aware of that, I'm just asking from the sense of one pack is all. I can get 5 days out of my Selway right now Spring through early Fall, but I"m not the biggest fan of it's configuration. It works alright, but I'd prefer a bit more traditional pack. I'm honestly leaning towards the...

    MR Metcalf or Beartooth 80

Are you saying you can't compress the Beartooth down for say 2-3 trips? To much extra fabric that makes it sloppy I'm guessing for lighter loads.

    MR Metcalf or Beartooth 80

Good timing of a post. Looking to go up a size in carrying capacity over the Selway that I have right now. I'm leaning towards the Metcalf as most hunts are 4-5 days and possibly a Pintler for day trips.

What sleep pad do you all use?

Understood on fabrics. I've been exclusively on EXPED mats for almost 7yrs now and have yet to puncture a UL 20D mat. It happens for sure, but EXPED is more than happy to repair the mat if that happens, simply ship it to them. So long as you choose your sleep site well and keep your tent for...

What sleep pad do you all use?

For 2020, most companies, and any company being sold at REI is abiding by ASTM standards for r-value testing. So any 2020 production mat will be much more apples to apples when you compare r-values. And if you want some light reading, EXPED has been testing r-values, 3rd party for almost 20yrs...

    Big man Sleeping Pad

Even at 175lbs, I tend to opt for the slightly heavier EXPED SynMat Winter UL/HL series. That 9cm of warmth and cushion just can't be beat.

    Temps below sleeping bag rating

You haven't mentioned whether or not your 20F down bag is EN rated. If it's not, I'd bet you'd only be warm in to the mid 30's when paired with an appropriate sleeping mat. Be aware, that sleeping pad standards are also coming in to play this season, you'll see EXPED and Thermarest both using a...

What pack tarp is everyone using?

EXPED Solo Tarp lives in my pack no matter if I"m out for a day or a week. http://www.exped.com/usa/en/product-category/tents/solo-tarp

Do you think they read our comments?

Companies monitor message boards, whether they post is another question. One thing to remember, that when feedback is taken in to account for changes to current product, you are looking at almost a minimum of 12mo before ever seeing the change, more like 18-24mo due to production lead times...

    Sleeping Pad Patch?

The patches are purely cosmetic. We suggest 3 layers of glue with sufficient dry time 2-3hrs in between each one if you are repairing at home. if it is a field repair, a layer of glue and then hopefully a second if you have enough time before bed would be sufficient.

Need suggestions to fix my sleeping situation

Unless you find the odd duck any more, you will only find the DownMat XP or SynMat XP models available. Both of these loose the internal hand pump and in turn give you a Schnozzel Pumpbag for inflation. Both mats loose a little weight in the process and each is available in 7cm or 9cm...

    Sleeping Pad Patch?

Glue, such as seam grip is your best option for a permanent fix. Tenacious tape and other similar tapes are meant for field repair and aren't as air tight for long term repair.

Can't decide between 3 sleeping pads

Throwing out another EXPED option if you are looking to keep weight down but have 9cm of cush bed beneath you, SynMat UL Winter 20.6oz (size medium) and a 5.2 R-value. It's actually the more comparable mat to the X-Therm as the X-therm uses 30D fabric, SynMat UL Winter uses 20d. The SynMat 9...
