this particular set of woods had pretty good visibility for elk country, mostly pines but on rocky terrain, so nothing but crispy pine needles underfoot and in sections pretty good visibility
Had an encounter over the weekend where i called in a good bull, super pissed off cause i got between his cows and him (thanks for the tip Elknut! that challenge worked like a charm in that situation) and he came into 20 yards but didnt step into my shooting lane... i know i know... my bad...
If the woods are quiet, just sit and listen for awhile, get in the area you think theyre bedding and theyll eventually make noises from their beds and you can pinpoint where they are located. It probably isnt gonna be a full bugle, but it will be an elk noise.
Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it.
Im out of the area for muzzeloader season currently and taking care of some stuff for work this week, so my scent should dissipate in the area.
Also bringing a caller with me the last weekend so hopefully that will switch up the sound and eliminate...
every scenario got treated different based off how the elk was acting.
Some were fired up from the get go and i just charged in and challenged / cut off / etc. and they came in pissed off.
Some had just got up from bed and let me know where they were, so i raked a tree and they just walked...
Still young enough and dumb enough to go after the elk wherever they may be, high, in a hole, down whatever canyon they named after some demon/hell/crappy location because it sucks, i agree with the others, gotta formulate a plan to get at them, and if thermals are gonna screw you before you can...
So i checked out a new spot over the last few days....
Tons O' Fun .... really opened my eyes to what could be in elk hunting (point unit) vs. what i experienced in OTC units
Multiple encounters every day, pulled my bow a few times, few nearly got em but didnt step into my shooting lane and...
Got some reports from buddies in NM that theyre seeing / taking bulls that are damn near in full velvet still... pretty freaking cool.
Seen elk high and low this year so far... doesnt seem to be a rhyme or particular elevation theyre at
I wear solid bottoms all season, sneak past elk without a thought, as long as im staying still i know theyre not gonna pick me out.
That said, i wear camo up top - thats where the motion is when i draw
The biggest elk hunting stud i know sets his solo bull limit at 3-4 miles... and this guys a stud. Solo elk hunts only, hates having someone along and has a long trail of dead bulls to show for it.... at 3-4 miles he's pretty broken down getting it out solo and if its early September and its...
Learning situation i guess, feels a little bad thinking back on it.. "duh, that WAS the golden opportunity, you (me) got between the bull and his cows.... and then you (me in my head) didnt capitalize on it".....
Live and learn and that somehow is truer every elk season im lucky enough to go...
Appreciate it ElkNut!
Would you have done that with the cows within 50 yards of your location? When i mean i snuck into position i mean... i was basically in the cows and i think the last of the cows filed out of the woods in front of me with 15 minutes to go on the clock.... I thought if i...
I'm sure its place to place and herd to herd...
But this weekend I got on 2 groups of cows (huge groups, like 30+) in two different spots... they'd come feeding out of the timber... i could hear a bull up above... he bugled when he got out of bed.....
So i snuck around them and put myself in a...
Could have this year.... didnt. Holding out for something bigger and not killing a cow this year. Buddy missed a bull this year in the opening hour... told that guy to practice more... learned the hard way. His very first elk hunt. The tree didnt mind the arrow though thankfully.
I feel you, next year i'll have weddings to attend in September.... i just dont know why my friends / family dislike me so much.... i thought the whole world paused for September elk season..... haha
I dont leave the trailheads / roads / but i do look at pressure and see what it looks like. That said : i usually dont get pushed off of Plan A on the first day. As its been preached and as it seems to be : most people dont go more then a mile from their vehicle.... so i'll stick to plan A...
