I was in the same boat as you. I just bought a lightly used pair of B3 8x30’s for a great deal. Not exactly what I anticipated, but a deal is a deal and the 8x30’s are super compact for my run & gun archery hunts.
My research led me to Maven B1 9x45 for a sub $1k price range.
Hope this helps
What’s the purpose of the rifle?
What’s the overall budget?
For the “average” dude with a ~$1.5k all-in budget, the Ruger with an SWFA/Trijicon is a very, very competitive option.
Is a Tikka T3X 1.5x the rifle of the Ruger American?
-Not sure, no experience with the new Ruger
I currently use an Elbertstock Nosegunner which has been OK for me.
Mainly bowhunt & turkey hunt Georgia, Alabama nowadays. 10x42 or 12x50’s are my main-stay binos between timber or power/gas line hunting.
That being said, what’s a “good” chest bino harness with a rangefinder pouch that keeps...
Selling my Garmin Oregon 600 with OnX Elite Chip.
No longer do cool Western stuff with a family & all. It’s sat in my drawer for several years. Works great. PM for details.
Doesn’t eat up your phones batteries. Great for backcountry trips
Buck Thwacker is my Archery Talk UN
My main reservation (aside from price) is accidentally ranging a twig or branch in a low light scenario. I hunt a lot of thick pines, creek bottoms etc where foliage 1-4’ exists. Most is pencil diameter or thinner, which can be hard to see in low-light at 20-30 yards.
Have you had any issues...
Yup I agree all around- Minus the Garmin as I’ve not used one personally.
I’m going to try finding someone to 3D print a large MRT style ring for my MBG. That should make it a lot better IMO
I bought a 1/4” and 5/16” peeps, hopefully one pairs up well with my 2” sight housing MBG.
Ultimately...
Like I said, the 2-10x56 Trijicon Credo is probably what you want then. If you were to get a new scope.
I really don’t see the purpose for red dots on deer rifles. You give up so much accuracy compared to a riflescope, not to mention in low light your effective range drastically drops as it...
What? What exactly are you looking at gaining from dropping a 3-9x42mm down to a 1-6x24mm scope?
You need a large objective and thick, ideally illuminated reticle, to handle the low light scenarios we deal with. The trade-off of losing that larger objective and light-gathering is NOWHERE worth...
In good light, LVPO’s are fine. In limited light situations, it doesn’t matter if you’re on 1x, you are not seeing your target.
For my 100 & in rifles, they get irons & red dots
100 & out wear at least 44+ obj
You think, until a big buck steps out at dusk with 6 minutes of legal light left, and that 24mm can’t see the buck that you can visibly see with your own eyes.
I will never deer hunt with an LVPO again.
CVA Scout
Most compact rifle I own, haven’t chopped the barrel down to 16” either.
I see guys with TBAC Ultra 338’s on 18” CVA Scout’s and it’s still 2” shorter than a Compact Tikka
Mines in 6.5CM and shoots sub MOA 5-Shot groups. I’d get either 6.5, .243 or .300BO and chop the barrel to 16”...
I just ordered a Custom Montana Black Gold Rush with the 2” housing and 3” ML3 base.
I went with a 5 Pin with a .029-.019-.019-.010-.010 configuration.
Apparently MBG is phasing out of the 2” sight housings and sticking to 1.75” from here on out. If that’s true, I may order another Rush in a...
I wish I had a Sharp’s or FT stock to give you some numbers. Have you tried to reach out to the manufacturer and see if they have any more data on-hand?
I hope your son enjoys the CVA Scout. The .300BO is an excellent choice as well. Suppressed that should be a fun gun to shoot.
To my knowledge they are not, but I am not a fan of them. I’d rather use a larger peep & sight housing because I feel a lot of sight lights wash out the target.
