To successfully call in mature bucks, it’s all about how you’re setup.
You need to utilize the topography and/or foliage to your advantage. Think of it like turkey hunting for sight and also consider your wind direction. A mature buck will try to swing in down wind of you, so be looking down...
“Lightweight” is a relative term. For me personally, a 6-7# weight range rifle is “lightweight” and anything sub 6# is “Ultra Lightweight” in my opinion.
- That’s hunt ready weight, not factory weight.
I personally see no need for 4-5# hunting rifles, they don’t shoot as good in actual field...
Agreed. I’d put a CVA Scout up against any NEF/H&R rifle though. I’m unsure why the prices for the aforementioned brands seem to keep going up. For $500 I’d rather have a Sauer or save up for a Tikka/Rem700 action build
The only single shot rifles I’d pay over $500 for would be Ruger #1’s or...
1/10 twist in the .243 is depressing to find out, but the 6.5 is still an “easy” shooter that’s accurate.
I haven’t been in the market for another CVA Scout, so I’m not sure if the 6.5’s are still made in SS version or not.
CVA used to make a .223 Scout in the “hunter” model… I’ve been...
CVA Scout 6.5CM
I paid $315 for this gun and it shoots at/under 1” with my 140 BT hand loads. Trigger is great, super compact and relatively lightweight. My full setup weights around 7.5# with a pocket knife, 7 bullets and a flashlight in the stock pouch.
Another nod for the Ruger American if...
Get you a CVA Scout with an SWFA 3-9, or Trijicon Credo/Huron and go kill some stuff. Keep it simple.
There’s a knife, 7 shells & flashlight in that stock pouch. Still a sub 8# setup.
For an east coast whitetail hunter, I haven’t found anything more efficient.
They’re phenomenal little guns, especially for the price. I’d seriously consider the .243 CVA Scout or the 6.5
This gun has killed a truck load of deer and I haven’t owned it for very long.
6.5CM
140 Nosler BT handloads with Viht N555 & Lapua Brass & CCI 400’s
Shot distance approximately 51 yards
Travel distance approximately 33 yards
Average deer distance traveled after the shot ; 33 yards with Nosler BT’s & Hornady ELDX’s
All blood trails have been able to be trailed...
Thanks for the responses folks, keep them coming.
To emphasize, I believe we all are trying to setup for that “perfect” 20-75 yard broadside shot right in front of us… Reality is we’re hunting wild animals that do wild things.
Where I hunt in the Southeast, we’re either hunting thick woods...
Thanks for the input guys.
I’ve been a lifetime bow hunter, but more recently just due to interests and time constraints… have been getting into rifle hunting.
I’ve been hunting more properties with cutovers, power-lines and gas-lines where the opportunity for a 300+ yard shot is a reality...
As the title states, what is your self imposed shooting distance from a tree stand *with a rifle*
Personally I prefer keeping shots inside of 150 yards, ideally sub 100 yards if I’m shooting “free hand”
If I have a shooting bar, rest etc I’d feel comfortable out to 200-250 yards.
That being...
No.
I’ve taken 6 bucks over the last 3 seasons and the average distance they’ve ran was something like 33 yards.
All shot with 6.5 CM, 5 with 140 Nosler BT’s, 1 Hornady ELD. Aiming just above the elbow, where the Heart & Lungs should meet.
I’ve tracked deer shot “high shoulder” and typically...
No platform for the saddle?
No matter how you look at it, most of the lighter weight “mobile” saddle/stand hunting setups will cost you some big $$$ new.
Now used you can find some decent deals, but nothing like we had 5-10 years ago.. I wish I bought 5 sets of the LW climbing sticks when...
What’s the average saddle, platform, ropes, ascenders & carabiners cost?
Don’t cherry pick some BS mass produced budget setups, either.
Take out a loan… We work hard and invest in quality equipment that will last a long time.
Very interesting.
I have a CVA Scout in 6.5, but have not shot it suppressed. With hand loads, I average around 1” at 100 with 5 shot groups.
That being said, I’m curious if the barrel harmonics change with the suppressor & supers as the barrel begins to heat up?
I did have an instance one...
Sorry I thought I responded to you previously.
That’s encouraging to hear. I was just plugging in some numbers into online calculators, I’ll have to see what this barrel produces MV wise.
That’s what I’ll end up doing I believe. After the suppressor & large objective scope, I anticipate this rifle weighting over 11# but for my style of hunting… it’s a non-issue.
I have a 7# rifle for when I’ll be more mobile anyways.
“Mobile” for an average southern hunter might mean walking...
The CVA Scout reigns king for a mobile style deer hunter, in my opinion.
Most of my shots on deer are inside of 100 yards, I believe my average shot distance with a rifle on a whitetail over the last 4 seasons has been 33-35 yards, if memory serves me right.
I also hunt with an 18” AR15 with...
