I had the advantage of seeing the live bear, and I think everyone is pretty well spot on. I am fairly certain this was a sow, 7.5', Maybe a bit more. (This pic is from the AK peninsula where the bears get BIG!)
The thin ankles certain say that it is a younger bear, and that short neck and "dog...
alaska moose
Here is a 62"er from central Alaska.
By far the best part of this particular moose hunt was that my client shot these 2 wolves off of the carcass. Unfortunately he only had 2 wolf tags. I would bet that there was 10 wolves working on this bull. Another guide and hunter came up...
Hello fellow bear hunters! You are looking at an Alaskan brown bear. We all know that boars are generally bigger than sows. What sex, and how big do you think this brownie is?
Alot of the fun/challenge of brown bear guiding is that you are never 100% sure of what you have shot until you walk up...
alaska brown bears
Here's a couple more pics.
The live bear was a 9 1/2'er (The track was over 8", so pretty much tells you that it is about 9.5')
The dead bear that is staring at you like Clint Eastwood, made B+C, squared 10' 4" with no stretch, and it wasn't fleshed. Client shot him at 28...
Alaska brown bear
Hopefully this works,,, never posted a picture before. Here is a 10'8" brownie from the AK peninsula. We chased this bear for 3 days before we got him. Were less than 40 yards away from him in the alders 4 different times on the first day, but couldn't get a clear shot.
Kudos...
I've got 80 days of guiding planned "Up North" in "God's Country" for this year. Twenty days in May for brown bear, and then grizzly, caribou, Dall sheep, in August, and then moose and grizzly in September/early October. I am spoiled rotten,,, I know, but I promise to post some pictures and...
I know many won't agree, but I personally like 10X's binos, and a 80mm soptting scope. ( I currently use Leica, but hope to move on to Swarovski.) But when It comes to glass, at least in Alaska, the extra weight saves me more miles. I used to use a 65 mm spotter, and I wouldn't go back to it if...
Thanks for the flattering comments, guys. It's hard to believe that 25 years ago, hunting in Alaska was just a far-fetched dream. I have been extremely blessed in many ways. This past year I spent just over 100 days in the bush, and most of those hunts can be seen on my Season 5 DVD.
Season 4...
I have gone to a christian church my entire life, but my understanding of faith finally came together in my time spent alone in the wilderness of Alaska. So much in fact, I am currently writing a book on hunting in Alaska, and about half the stories boil down to the amazing creations that I have...
I've used the Kelvin jacket. I find it to be over priced. It isn't very durable. I am usually an XL, but needed a 2XL, and it was still tight in the shoulders, short in the arms, and way too big in the bottom.(I realize that fittings vary for each person, but I usually have not problems. I am...
Barney's packs, in my opinion, are for guides, MR and the Timberline are for guided hunters. DIY hunters may go either way. I have never guided a guy in Alaska who likes an external frame pack, even Barney's. They don't offer the flexibility of the latest models of internal frames. I haven't...
Hanwag Trapper GTX, from Lathrop and Sons, is all I wear for guiding in Alaska. This past year, I spent 100 days in the bush for everything from moose to Dall sheep. These boots are the best all-around boot I have ever worn, and I have tried alot of them. There offer plenty of support for sheep...
For Dall sheep in Alaska, I carry a 80mm scope, a heavy-5 ft. tripod, 1-2 video cameras with plenty of batteries (4-5), 1 still camera, a full-sized tent, 1-extra pair of socks, a full-handled toothbrush and paste, a book, 2-trekking poles full-length pad, a long sleeping bag, a heavier than...
I always try for 10! I rarely get it, but when the weather is bad, and hunting is marginal, I don't waste any extra effort to struggle trough it. I often times don't even hunt at all. I rest up for when the weather is good, and then give it 100%, and then I probably sleep about 6 hours per night.
