    Hunting Boot PTSD

To illustrate my point on European sizes, I wear both a 45 Euro in Zamberlan and Hanwag. For Zamberlan, this is a US 10.5: https://www.zamberlanusa.com/page/size-charts For Hanwag, this is a US 11.5: https://www.hanwag.com/us/en-us/customer-service/size-chart

    Fixing a Flinch

I will just say that I am a very anxious person and many of the techniques to fix my mental health carry over to precision shooting and vice-versa. So much so that my mental health takes a nose dive if I haven't been able to shoot in a while. My anxiety got better once I told myself nothing is...

    Hunting Boot PTSD

I'm an engineer by trade and tend to overanalyze everything, so I hear you. During my search it's not uncommon to have three dozen browser tabs open comparing different models and features. To date, I have spent more on boots/shoes/footwear than my wife. My best advice is to order a bunch of...

    Colorado draw results 2024

2nd choice ML tag and a point. Will be spending mid September in the mountains.

    Maven binos

I went from the C.1 10x42 to the B.2 9x45. Less magnification, but much better glass that helps me pick up a ton. They really shine in low light.

    Blackhorn

My working theory is that after the buyout, Hodgdon needed to "differentiate" BH 209 from its other powders. As a result, BH209 was made to be a "premium" product with the associated price and (possibly artificial) scarcity.

What would you say is the wildest part of Colorado?

Colfax Avenue in Denver. Also, downtown Castle Rock after dark... full of cougars.

CVA Accura LRX or Paramount Pro

Called CVA directly today: "End of the year at the earliest" and it sounds like they're reworking parts of the design.

    DIY Colorado mule deer 2025.

Plains requires access (nearly all private) and the really good habitat has been leased by outfitters. You can absolutely shoot a monster out there, but your pocketbook will be lighter. Honestly a "management" buck through one of these outfits would likely be the biggest buck I've ever taken...

2024 CO Goat and Sheep Draw

Good point. I forgot about that part of the equation.

2024 CO Goat and Sheep Draw

Paid $100 for the privilege of doing it again next year with slightly better odds.

    Your go to Broadheads!?

QAD Exodus and it isn't even close. The only crappy thing about them is that they are so low profile (I use the swept variety) that they can hide tuning issues, like a mechanical.

    Spotting scopes…

Highly recommend giving them a call as well. Be forewarned that you will have someone with a NY accent ask you a bunch of questions and listen to your budget and requirements and then give you several options and tradeoffs of said options. I wish figuring out my layering system was as easy as...

    Spotting scopes…

I have the Maven CS.1 and Magview. Good way to get your feet wet and then figure out your particular use case for a spotter.

Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo

My kids had a blast today. We had a late start since the winds tried sending my smoker to Kansas. My oldest (he's a little over three) shot his first foam elk today. He saw the booth and said "me shoot bow" all on his own. He needed a little help, but even with my coaching he found the vitals.

Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo

Overall show impressions: 1. Very gear focused. You can put your hands on some really cool stuff. My checkbook will likely be getting lighter. This is very different than the "other show in Denver" which has become a showcase for outfitters. 2. Very well organized. Plenty of parking on site and...

Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo

I don't want to sound like a paid testimonial (although I could write an even better review for the low-low price of one of those $125k+ fishing boats they had on display at the show), but Robby and Travis's talk was awesome. I think I noticed a crowd larger than Fred Eichler had. The best way I...

Elk in heavy recreational traffic areas

I'm spilling my secrets: wear a Grateful Dead t-shirt and smell like weed and you can stalk them to point blank range.

Talk Me Out of a Knight Mountaineer

Ok, I couldn't resist. I have now seen peak stupidity. https://www.muzzleloaders.com/product/brown-ultra-lite-muzzleloader/ Configure this rifle in .50 cal with FPJ ignition. If you want sights, it is $1,093.99 No sights is $1,493.99. So it's a $400 upgrade to REMOVE sights and not drill/tap...

Talk Me Out of a Knight Mountaineer

Last post to point out this BS: You can order a Mountaineer stock assembly from Knight in shadow gray. The straight stock is $608.99, the thumbhole is $429.99. Now if you order a straight stock Mountaineer (complete gun), it's a $475 difference in price versus the thumbhole model. Someone is...
