I believe in the past one could change hunt choices after the application deadline in WY; is this still the case and how long has it been available in past years?
How I apply depends on how I fare in CO. Thanks
Tried it with a TW-200. I took several falls and it was more exhausting than just hiking in. Treacherous if there's any mud, as the front wheel kept sliding out - Maybe it's because I haven't ridden a bike in a while.
Worked in the WY oil industry for a few years before the crash, but saw the writing on the wall and found something before getting laid off. The pay is very good, but the culture/work environment is poor compared to other industries. The problem with the boom and bust cycle is that your buying a...
For me, the Harris is still the best option. It does suck having an extra pound on the end of your gun, but it's offset by the stability, simplicity, rapid deployment, price, and a platform to set your rifle down when glassing or in camp.
"However, if I was a nonresident and wanted to hunt mountains for mule deer, I'd pick another state (I'd go to Colorado). "
This is good advice, I'd hunt some 2nd choice CO units over the "best" MT general units. MT just does not manage for any age class
You are correct that you need to apply for the deer or deer/elk combination license (general tag) first, which is the tag you need to hunt SE MT. You can then apply for the limited quota units, of which most of the better units are in the western part of the state.
Having a family to support doesn't make you a downer; sounds like the "go for your dreams and work 5-10 seasonal jobs" guys may not have the same responsibilities or perspective as a veteran, ~24 year old with a wife & kids? Money doesn't buy happiness, but it is sure nice not having to worry...
Basically 2 routes to go in the private sector, consulting or working for a corporation/company. Consulting is probably the best money, but you can have a lot of hours - consulting firms make hay when the sun shines. Also, having to "sell" yourself/recruit new clients and log client hours is...
Not to be a Debbie Downer...
I majored in wildlife biology after getting out of the Marines. It is not easy to find work in that field with the government agencies, even with a masters; there is not a lot of openings & very little turnover. Some consulting work, but that has it's challenges as...
Does anyone know how/if shedding dates indicate the condition of the bucks?
I've heard 2 theories, earlier indicates good condition because of the pedicle developing early for the next growing season, and later indicating good condition (I think something to do with testosterone/hormone levels).
Montana is the only state that I know of that has general late season rifle muley tags. There are plenty of small/medium bucks and enough public/block management to have a fun hunt, especially in the eastern part of the state. Not much for quality (160+), which is the downside to having general...
Montana FWP actually manages the wildlife resource? Seems like their crippling the resource for deer & elk (general tags through the end of Nov, Elk Shoulder seasons into Feb, etc.)
Looked at one in the store, and it looked well put together, though the stock felt short to me. Also, I read that the feed box was too short to accept longer hand loads (bergers)?
Had the Suunto and ended up selling it. Just didn't use the GPS very much and the interface/battery life was poor, plus they are bulky & just another gadget to deal with in the field. It was pretty handy for daily exercise.
I'm torn on this issue. I believe that hunting is permitted on these two designations. However, I also know there are monuments where hunting is not allowed (Colorado National Monument in GMU 40). I'm also for responsible industry to support decent paying local jobs, just not to the degree where...
It's a nice softshell for medium temps & the fit is very good. Not very warm, wind proof, and packable though. Not something I'd take in on a backpack hunt.
Hunted MT hard last week; cold temps and snow. I know it's early for the rut, but all the deer I glassed we're bedded up at sunrise & stayed all day, with no wind half the time. I haven't hunted muley's late very many times, was expecting the does to be up and feeding with lows below 0 and highs...
