I carry the correct allen keys (and torx key) for my rifle/scope rings in a sling thing. Also carry a swiss army knife that has screwdrivers plus is my spare blade for animal cleaning/camp knife.
Total kit weight is light and allows you to tighten action and mount screws if needed.

I don't disagree. I had an old Sako AV with monte carlo stock and it felt like taking a left hook whenever you shot it. I'd have suppressed it, but it was in such good vintage condition I couldn't bring myself to alter the original Bofors barrel on it.
I was partially tongue in cheek. If I was...
I have sometimes taken my Canon 15x50 IS binos vs. a spotter. The human brain works better using two eyes vs. one. Although image stabilized binos may have smaller mag, they can often work better than higher mag spotters simply because they are more comfortable to use with both eyes.
I run SHV 3-10s on multiple rifles and it's a great scope to 300-400 yards. I shoot with it out to 800y for practice and it dials reliably and holds zero. The dials are also capped so you won't spin them by accident, but have good clicks when you need to dial.
First hunt I went on with a 30-06, I waited for two hogs to get lined up and killed them with one corelokt bullet. So the 30-06 is also economical to shoot as it conserves ammo.
Two stories that I remember from guides:
Guy setup on deer that was about 150m away. Ranged it and dialed(!). Then messed up the shot with a magnum and wounded it. Animal hit multiple times and ran. Found it later and put in finishing shot.
Another on an animal a few hundred meters away. Guy...
Yes. You need to quickly ID the animal and execute. I see a lot of videos with people in prone, kestrel out, scrolling ballistic app, adjusting bipod, doing some yoga to loosen up, etc. Way too slow in the field.
Guides here in NZ complain about this. Hunters come down with way too much gun...
Posting examples of the animal targets we use in field comps made by Rifle Ranch Targets in Timaru, New Zealand. Using a full size animal vs. a plate alone makes it more challenging. At distance it can be hard to clearly see the kill zone and is more realistic than a plate hanging out by itself...
If a reticle requires illumination to be seen, it's a bad reticle. I never use the feature and won't buy a scope that has a reticle that needs to have it turned on to use.
The SHV illumination flares out badly. Worst I've seen on a scope and not clean like the NXS models.
I have been looking at the Mavens and wouldn't be surprised if they use a similar illum method to the SHV from NF. They are hitting a particular price point so I suspect it is what it is.
The...
South Island. They may do one up north, but I don't recall.
Last shoot it was so windy up top you had a hard time standing. On 300y shots my 270 was blown completely off the target by the wind which has never happened before. It was gale force windy. I didn't have a Kestrel and was really...
Two things:
1) There are no ticks in NZ.
2) There is no poison ivy/oak either.
But mostly, you often are doing a lot of hill climbing and stream crossing. If you wear shorts you can stay cooler, and your legs dry really fast after going through water.
Often you'll see guys wearing long...
We have hunting matches down here in New Zealand that are field style. Rifle weight limit to10# max. 60 seconds for the stage. Only first round scores. You get two follow-up rounds to figure out what went wrong if you want, but they do not score.
Shooting positions are prone, shooting off...
I've never seen anyone use a treestand for hunting in NZ. The deer here do not tend to follow that kind of predictable pattern. However hunting in shorts is common and longer tail helps keep water off your legs and also more comfortable for sitting.
The Cactus gear will be substantially higher quality than Hunter's Element or Stoney Creek, etc.
Swazi raingear often has a soft finish and wets out. The famed Swazi Tahr Anorak gets very cold and heavy in sustained rain. Has poor breathability as well once that happens. I think Swazi gear is...
Cactus Outdoor makes a really good long cut rain jacket. I use the olive version of this one for hunting:

Following up on the above. I was able to look at the backstraps and tenderloins in the daylight. The tenderloins I will need to throw out as they look damaged/bloodshot. The front half of the backstraps I may do the same to be safe. The bullet fragmentation I suspect has contaminated much of the...
Ok went out again for another fallow deer cull. Used my Blaser R8 in 223. I have not been able to get together a heavier load to try, but did decide to try the V-Max 60gr as construction is similar to ELDM, but in a flat base. Basically, I want a fragmenting bullet like I use in my other rifles...
