    Leica geovid R 10x42

I have the 10x42 HD-Bs and they are good binos, but like Form said you must follow the focusing instructions exactly. I also find it good to not focus after you've been staring at screens a long time. Do it when your eyes are relaxed. And like focusing a scope, it's best to take small glances...

Anyone have better success using RainX anti-fog than I did?

The coatings on the lenses may affect how it works. Also the RainX could damage the coatings so it's a risk either way. I wouldn't try it on an expensive scope.

    Fog proof rangefinders?

Best I used were older Vectronix PLRF series, but pretty hard to find and extremely expensive. Better units will have a gating feature where you can set them up to ignore the closest or furthest reflections. Ignore furthest setting is good for close up targets with further background that may...

How many have missed animals due to a failed scope?

My first hunting rifle was a 30-06 with a Simmons. Took it to the range to sight in. First shot. Second Shot. Third shot...and the reticle disappeared into a pile in the bottom of the scope. Seen others have reticles tilt, scopes fog out, and even a turret pop off and into pieces. But...

NF SHV 4-14x50, MOAR vs Mil R visibility

I like NF scopes and run them on most of my rifles, but it's just clear that their ranging reticles are made for high power and they just don't seem too concerned for people using the FFP scopes in the 4-8X range. My hunting rifles use SFP scopes as a result. It's not a big deal because if I...

NF SHV 4-14x50, MOAR vs Mil R visibility

I don't own either in FFP any more. Sold them due to bad reticle at low power. I only have a MOAR in SHV 3-10 SFP. The reticle is OK there, but is sized for 10X. On the FFP scopes the reticles were hair thin and easily lost in darker bush. The Mil-R reticle was particularly bad with the gaps in...

NF SHV 4-14x50, MOAR vs Mil R visibility

They are both bad. The MOAR reticle is less bad.

    6.5x55 or 6.5 PRC

I have a couple 6.5x55s but I reload. There are some decent factory loads, but mostly reloading is best if you want best performance. Velocity wise, they are ballistically identical to 6.5 Creedmoor shooting about 2700-2750fps with identical bullets. Accuracy with this round has always been...

Match bullets vs early hunting bullets

Yes that is typical of what I've had happen. Jackets separate or sometimes break up. I never know what I'll find and it also depends on impact velocity. If you want consistent double entry/exit a traditional hunting bullet is probably best.

    New air rifle….

The Air Arms TX200 is very consistent because the charging lever is under the barrel, not the barrel itself like a break-barrel design. The rifle is used by air rifle field shooters to win championships so it is very consistent. I don't leave mine cocked though and wouldn't advise that. I did...

    New air rifle….

Air Arms TX200 spring air if you can swing it. Accurate, quiet, extremely well built. Shrouded barrel is quiet. I have one in .22 shooting GTO lead free pellets at 850fps and puts down rabbits with head shots like lightning. I looked at PCP rifles as well, but like you point out they need lots...

    NF vs Trijicon

I was trying the Tenmile 3-18x44 with mil reticle. The scope has everything going for it, but the reticle just killed it. Mainly good for shooting at 8X+ on bright days. For lower power the stadia does not extend to edges (why??) and the milling portion in the center is extremely difficult to...

    NF vs Trijicon

FFP is vastly overrated for most hunting situations and has many significant drawbacks at practical and common hunting ranges. The reticles are often optimized for full power and long range and work poorly at lower powers and in low light. I wanted to like the Trijicon Tenmile but the reticle...

Why Attend a Long-Range Shooting Course?

One of the best LR courses I've ever taken didn't bill itself as LR at all: An Appleseed Shoot. The reason is they spend heaps of time emphasizing natural point of aim (NPOA) in various positions. If you can get your NPOA quickly, you can pull off really good field accuracy shooting. They also...

Alpha glass, 56mm objective, turrets & reliability - does it exist?

I have shot thousands of rounds on an S&B 5-25x56 without issue, but I've seen one blow a seal and fog at a match. I've also had good luck with the Steiner 5-25x56 with MSR reticle (made in Germany) on a 338LM for 1,000+ rounds. I can't comment on other versions. My feeling is that heavier...

    To image stabilize or not?

I have used Canon 15x50s Image Stabilized for many years now, including on some hunts vs. bringing a spotter, and they have been extremely reliable. Note some IS tech will not work well on tripods so it is good to check to be sure on whatever brand you choose. Canon has been doing IS optics for...

.223, 6mm, and 6.5 failures on big game

There have been huge marketing pushes the past 10+ years by certain bullet companies and scope makers to encourage long-range hunting. Like you note, 99% of my shots on game animals have been under 400, with most well under 300 yards. In fact, I asked this question of hunting mates here how...

How are you training for long range?

There is a lot to go wrong for sure. One thing with shooting on plates is it downplays the significance of a miss. I have seen many times someone walk a shot onto a plate, then after taking five shots to get on it, hit it another five+ times and think everything is fine. They forgot about the...

How are you training for long range?

For most hunting rifles working perfectly, with great shooting, the best ammo, in the most stable position, and with no wind is going to be about 1 MOA. So for the 750 yard shot discussed, you are giving up 7.5" in variation just in the cone of fire from perfect shooting with a perfect rifle and...

7mm-08 Rem success on big game

7mm-08 is/was one of the most popular calibers in New Zealand. Kills everything deer sized to wapiti (elk) here.
