Could a CO Unit 53 wizard answer an access question by DM? Looking at a major drainage that I'm sure must have an outfitter trail/non-official USFS track going up it (seeing glimpses of it by satellite), but if it doesn't exist, has big implications for a two-truck through-hunt. I've hunted 53...

Some gentlemen from the midwest, who I believe were under the impression that elk were as plentiful as cornfield whitetails and didn't have noses. I may add that they were all on foot, which doubled the insanity
Woah there cowboy, hadn't even given this issue much thought until today, and was convinced by some other folks' posts about OTC caps. I try to keep an open mind, and beat around the bush for a living. Don't even know much about LQ. Hope I didn't offend you
As an aside, if it meant I could...
haha, good point, It's a high basin where it's easy to glass elk over many square miles, almost impossible to get to them.
It would make it so Colorado OTC units wouldn't be an overflow/bonus option for everyone who failed to draw in every western state, you would have to pull a non-refundable...
I personally think OTC with caps is a better system, weeds out some folks who are less serious about making the trek to Colorado. Also could cut down on the number of exceedingly large and concentrated groups of NRs that come in. I ran into a backcountry camp of 20 DIYer last year in my...
I fear that it would not work as a supply and demand curve, folks will still have population estimates in hand, the thought that they are more clever/tougher than everyone else, and a willingness to blow a week of PTO and 2K to DIY hunt elk in Colorado, just to get out of the house. I think...
I don't want to start a firestorm here (sure it will anyway), but as we lose habitat and Elk hunter numbers continue to increase, how much longer will Colorado be able to offer large swaths on its units as OTC rifle tags? These elk herds are amazingly resilient, and many somehow grow despite...
For what it's worth, I find all these people go super deep to the same 4-5 drainages and bump up against each other. Lots of spots 1.5-3 miles in on the unit edge that you can hunt for a week without seeing other hunters. Have been sad to see more cars every year for the last 10 years.
It's a good question and I may well end up doing this. I have seen hundreds of deer go down hard by core lokt, but the reality is that every so often these blunt soft tips do weird things on contact with game (completely disintegrate/bounce off shoulder blades when shot at bad angles/blow up on...
