Yep just unscrew lower section and cover the screw threads with some plastic ends from a hardwear store (you can usually get an ideal fitting chair end)
Im gonna try a slik 635 and take the bottom leg section off for an UL sitting setup that will pack small.
I run my 634 with same mod and shortened centre column comes in at 30oz with aoaka ball head. Pretty happy with that actually.
I use the 554 when doing the longer trips and it gets the job done. ATS65 off the valley floor covers everything else but there is a weight and size penalty.
Leupy VX6 2-12 - TMOA reticle - Parallax set way out. Pretty OK weight, Very versatile and OK to 800yds
20 MOA rail so you have maintain good spring tension on the reticle (and dont end up at the end of of your adjustment)
That looks the same as the AOKA model on Amazon. Not stable with centre extension but ball head is ultralight and worth adding to a better set of legs like a Slik 624 if you want to strip ounces but still have a stable setup..
NL eyecup is slightly larger diameter on the eyepiece. When used on an EL they give you an even easier view with full FOV at even more eye relief. The Black edge outside of the fieldstop becomes thinner and the view more immersive. Just so easy to get behind.
Fitting NL eyecups to the ELS are also nice tuneup for the EL. Solid info here now the NL have been out for a while and proper comparisons have been done.
The 8.5 EL is also something special. Alot to be said for a good tryout. Pick the one that gives easy relaxing unpicky views, if your going to put the hours in glassing. Compare the tripod views too.
Just had a 3 day solo trip on the tops, that would have had a very rough 14hr walkout if the heli didnt make it for the pickup. Weight was critical because it was rough terrain and I had all hunting and tent kit.
The Kowa was awesome. Straight scope was easy to get on target. It was possible...
