    Heavier Puffy suggestions

Look for a sitka Kelvin down WS( wind stopper), they are discontinued but check around used markets. Not the Kelvin lite. It has a lot of fill, not sure how much tho. Look for 5+ oz of down fill. Also, check Feathered Friends and nunatak custom offerings for a world of actually warm puffies.

    Hydration system for cold weather

I use a hot tent and water bottles. I bury them in my pack under puffy layers. Make triple sure the lids are secure! But I'm not up hunting goats either. Actually, I've seen goats lower than the deer often so maybe I am sometimes.🙂 But I'm all for new tricks also. At certain temps it's just a...

Are lightweight baselayer bottoms a waste?

Like the others have said. With western hunting I can pretty much ONLY use light baselayers. I used a heavier set of kuiu merino's 200 I think, when it's bitter cold only occasionally, and still put on puffy pants to sit and glass. Peleton 97 zip offs are almost all I use now and I seldom use...

    Hot weather hoodie

Simms intruder button up hoodie or pullover has been nice. Comes in drab green/brown. I have a kuiu gila also but it's basically white in color. It would be great in earth tone or camo I suppose. Sitka lightweight hoodie has seen some years of use. I tried a few sunshirts this summer cuz of a...

    Wall Tent Lighting

I've went to a Milwaukee M18 lantern. A 12 amp battery lasts nearly the full week, with long evenings/early nights. Clicking a button is just too convenient when ya get up to stock the fire or pee. Can adjust the brightened level. At night I set it on the ground by my cot for ease and...

    Gerry Tech Pants at Costco

I've worn them as work/ everything pants for a long time. They do tend to get a bit stretched/saggy over time as they break in but hold up FAR better than any jeans on the job, the stretch is a big reason why I'd imagine. Worn them on a few hunts and lots of hikes. Cooler than attacks for...

    Big Hats for Big Heads

Mammoth hats as mentioned. They have a variety of styles I have a mesh snap back for warm weather and a wool snap back for a little warmth. They make beanies and such also. 7 7/8 noggin here. Also stormy kromer makes up to 8 I think. Have to usually order them that size tho.

    Elk hunting via boat?

If your talking fort peck reservoir, be advised its a giant body of water. And the wind blows up mid day at least, on just a normal nice day. My buddy nearly swamped in an 18' covered bow boat. Running the river is a bit different but it's dark water/bottom that's hard to read with plenty of...

Rain Gear in October - Idaho Backpack Elk Hunt

I'll pretty much always AT LEAST pack a rain coat. I have a kuiu ultra that's not made anymore and weighs 7oz, wish they still made it, its held up wayyyyy better than it should have. And I always have a down puffy coat. Think about what happens if that puffy gets soaked in icy rain, sleet and...

    Northwest Montana Elk

Glad to see the OP came back and updated us on his hunt! Way to typical, post asking for spot info and then never contribute a thing later on. No deer in NW Montana unless you want to shoot a river rat.

Recently missed a caribou on a hunt of a lifetime. What caused the miss?

Most likely cause is shooter error and I'd place my bets all square on rear support failing. Parallax or environmentals won't cause anything near that much of a miss.

    Why I won’t buy a Tikka

oOoOOk...perfect. Now what are the solutions you can offer?🙂 What actions have " no slop" and aren't too tight and crud up easy like some customs do that feel nice at home, but a little pinch of dust or a pine needle getting in some of them can lock them up.

    Rifle Accuracy Problems

+1 First double check all fasteners. Did you degrease and loktite/ paint pen the ring and mount screws? Check the action screw torque...is it at least 45 inch pounds, I'd go higher myself. 65 ish. Not sure of their specs on that but if it can't handle that torque that sucks.

    suppressors and still hunting

The length of the barrel isn't going to affect accuracy at all man. Well, it may actually have potential to INCREASE accuracy slightly. So that's zero concern. I have a t3x cut down to 16 and I use a ti dominus suppressor. It balances very nicely and still gives me enough velocity for bullet...
