I had no complaints about my K2. I think I will like the K4 at least as much though. The Nalgene holder and rifle holder one are significant upgrades in my mind. I can’t say if its better with weight or not until I get more time using it. I think the K2 was just good enough there is only so...
I can't add much that hasn't been said. 243 is my favorite for coyotes. I don't take it if I think I might call in a bobcat though, the 75gr bullets that work so well for coyotes ruined a cat for me.
I use my 243 or 25-06 almost exclusively for antlerless season on deer. They work great...
I just got in my new K4 system yesterday. I hiked about 3 miles with it today, and thought I'd give my initial thoughts. I'll add more after I get back from CO next month and use it on my hunt.
First impressions are very good. I have been using a K2 3500 for years and like it very much. I...
I had a 2200 question.
Does anyone have experience with getting a spotter and tripod in and out with the bag pretty well filled? I used a Kuiu 2300 daypack to hold all my gear except my Kowa 554 and Slik 624 with an Outdoorsmans micro pan head tonight as a trial. I had the 2300 pretty full...
I have not done that hunt, but if your packing all your food across tundra that far I’d be very weight conscious. Think high calories per ounce. Tundra is the toughest walking you will do. I’ve heard it said a mile of tundra is like 5 miles of mountains and I wouldn’t argue with that.
High...
I’d pick the Reiff of those if you want it to be a do all knife. Camp chores, maybe splitting kindling. Any would process game, but that knife would be tougher (and heavier) for other tasks.
I'm a fan of the giant Kifaru pack cover. It snugs down fine when used on my pack, but I often use it for other stuff like others have said. It makes a great wind break layer over my feet and legs when glassing for one thing. It surprised me how much having that dead air space around my feet...
I went from Meindl to Kennetrek and knew right away I’d never go back. I was lucky enough to find a used pair just broke in nice. Seller hurt his knee and didn’t think he’d ever need that stiff a boot again.
I'd decide on reticle or dialing first off, buy the scope after.
If I was not dialing I'd go with a Swaro Z3 or Z5 just depending on what you want to spend. I'd lean toward the 3.5-18x Z5 I think. I have a couple buddies that dial them with no issues, but I had one for a while and ended up...
I have an STC on the way. I currently have the 554. If I like the extra FOV as much as I expect to, I’ll sell the 554.
The glass on the 554 is amazing to me for a small spotter, I just think I will love the extra FOV enough to be worth the extra money. Maybe I’ll like glassing through it...
I've had good luck with Huskemaw 4-16x scopes on a couple rifles that see a lot of use. One is on the 300 win mag I have taken to AK 3 times and used on almost all my western hunts for the last 7 years. The other is on a 243 that sees a lot of time bouncing around in the truck or UTV working...
I've shot most of my bucks for 20 years with a 264 win mag shooting 140gr bullets at 2914fps. It's a mild load, but the rifle loves it. The 6.5 PRC can duplicate that performance so it would be my choice.
Nothing wrong with a 7mm-08 pushing 140's either.
The little extra speed and BC with...
I've had better luck with Kennetrek than Meindl, Danner, and other brands I've used. I treat them a couple times before a wet hunt though. I treat them first in August during the heat. I use Kennetrek wax and set them out in the sun all day on the deck. I bring them in at night to avoid dew...
I just got one of these springs for my new Hells Canyon Speed. I watched their video on other models, but they say the cerakote overspray needs removed from the trigger sear axis pin on the Hells Canyon model. Anyone done this or find a video on it? Thanks for the help.
I can see their point. I've seen people take forever to line up a shot.
I have yardage and MOA marks on my scope dials. I leave them set at 200, dial the yardage on closer shots out to 400 or so. Past that I'll use the ballistics app and MOA if there is time. I'm more of a long range...
I watched the explanation part of the video just out of curiosity.
Shooting test is 3 hits on a 12x14" steel oval shaped target. You can shoot standing or kneeling at 200, sitting or prone at 300. You can use sticks, tripod, or whatever rest you'd use in the field. Prone he used a bipod.
If you will be shooting off the tripod check out the Outdoorsman's rifle rest. It's pricey, but with 2 points of contact with the rifle it's been a game changer for me. I've shot whitetail, moose, caribou, and sitka blacktail off mine. Moose was kneeling at 300yds. Blacktail was standing at...
I'm no AK expert or resident. I've been on 3 AK trips for moose, caribou, and blacktail on Kodiak. I left my Swaro 15's at home each trip and never missed them. 10x42's off a tripod at times were all I needed to locate game, then I went to my compact Kowa 554 spotter to evaluate it if needed...
