FL ridgeline has worked pretty well for me. It can layer over a merino base or base plus fleece when hiking if needed. When I stop I put it over my Superdown Pro jacket to block wind and protect it from tears. Not to heavy and very versatile.
We did not try E scouting much. So much depends on weather and where other camps are, we waited until we were in Kodiak and talked to our transporter and used their maps
sheep tarp set up the same way.
If you aren’t moving during rain it can be draped around like a poncho for pretty good protection too.
I’d probably prefer the sheep tarp for just a shelter. Both are good quality, just no modifications needed for the sheep tarp.
I keep the 3 nite ize cord lines, 2 ranger bands, and 2 carabiners in a small ziplock. The poncho itself is in a bag from a north face stormbreak 2 footprint. The 8 Ruta Locura stakes are in a Pathfinder dyneema bag. All the weights earlier included those bags. I like to have them stored that...
I've talked about this on various other threads, but thought I'd make one dedicated to the new version. I read we all pack our fears, and I don't disagree. The items I won't compromise on have become a fixed blade knife, metal container (Vargo titanium BOT), and a poncho or tarp. I am always...
I mix dry cat food and corn in a gallon bag, pour that in. I have a squirt bottle of fish oil and squirt a little of that on top.
I was running 3 traps in each spot at 3 spots for a week, 1 with only corn, 1 with only catfood, and 1 with the mix and fish oil in my experiment. It may just be...
I just got back with an unpunched tag also from CO. We hunted a new unit we had not been to before. We saw a lot of deer just not the age class I was holding out for. My buddy and I scouted for 4 days this summer and identified some areas we liked that were difficult to get close to with a...
Weighing everything like the OP it really depends on the hunt. It's way easier to go light for a September elk hunt with decent weather, no spotter, etc. Later season things add up more. Heavier boots, warmer layers, different shelter and sleeping bag, etc. I always think it's hard to...
I also have not tried the Stone Glacier, but our Alaskan Guide Instinct tent has served us well on two trips to AK with plenty of bad weather. One trip was to Kodiak.
If you are ok with using a bonded bullet, the 90gr Accubond or Sirocco always worked well for me. My wife has used the 85 gr Partition with similar results. I used 100gr Sierra Gamekings in my 6mm for a while and they passed through most times. It was a little faster, they were moving 3150 at...
I wasn’t a huge fan of the benchmade pukko when I held one. I never used one though. It just didn’t feel the best for me. I like a little bit of a guard. Not enough to get in the way, but enough to feel when using the knife if that makes sense.
Factory knives I have and like in 3V are the...
I used an Altitude like I would my other knives cleaning my moose skull. I wasn’t impressed with it for that task. I wasn’t careful enough with it against the bone, and it dulled quicker than expected. I learned I was better off with a different steel that was easier to sharpen and more...
People pack their fears, and not having a tough knife is mine. I like a stouter fixed blade when in remote areas. I've posted my choice here before, it's a custom version of a Dozier Pro Guides knife. High saber grind 4.75" blade with a 90-degree spine in 3V steel. It's tough enough to abuse...
I use a Prairie Blaster 2 with the TX 1000 remote. I have added a lot of sounds to it over the years, or I may consider getting a new one. The only real drawback I've seen is the weight and bulk. I think the sounds are pretty good until the battery starts to get low. I have rechargeable...
They are expensive, but 90 grain Accubonds or Siroccos would work well. They don't expand so much that they ruin coyotes from my experience, but expand plenty to drop them.
85 grain Sierra Gamekings have done the same for me and shot well from every rifle I tried them in, but I don't know if...
I have a Kifaru tactical frame with a Nomad 2 bag. I bought it probably around 2017 so it may not be the same model you are asking about. I used it for my moose hunt in 2018. It was perfect for hauling moose quarters on the bone. The frame handled the loads as well as I could ask, as well as...
Thanks for all the replies.
How many days I can get out of a certain size of pack is always hard for me to say, and even harder for me to base decisions on from other people's reviews without more context.
For example a person on an early archery elk hunt who is carrying a light shelter, 30...
I like the first lite ridgeline windbreaker over a kuiu 240 or FL kiln pretty well. Sometimes I add a sitka mountain vest or jetstream vest.
All the brands have to get along in my system, I like pieces from all of them.
