Kifaru Timberline 2 internal frame pack complete with guide lid. Foliage green. 24” composite stays. Almost certain it’s a medium belt. I am 5’ 9” and was 34” waist when I ordered the pack to my specs. Bought new several years ago and never used. It has a sewn-on tab with my initials but that...
Every trip I’ve been on has been with an outfitter because 1) I am from TX and 2) I ain’t in good enough shape to pack 60 lbs around for miles and miles and 100+ lbs on a pack out anyway. 😊 So I like to pack light gear and shave ounces precisely because I’m not a mountain warrior.
But I do...
Agree 100%. I would personally characterize the way they give the odds as incorrect based on your correct analysis. But they are certainly misleading at the very least.
Basically all I’m saying is if there is no particular sequence the computer goes through on any particular parameter in any given draw then there is no way to predict your real odds of drawing ahead of time. The best you can do is an educated guess based on total numbers of apps vs. tags.
Even...
I get that they can draw the only tag in a one tag unit in Idaho (which is impossible to do in some states so you have to be real careful). But what I don’t know is if you can predict when in the draw the computer will draw for any particular unit. If you can’t, then you don’t know whether or...
I have been in the draw game for 22 years, have studied pretty diligently, and still don’t fully understand exactly how each state’s draws work.
This thread exemplifies that. ID is a random draw state with no bonus/preference point system and it’s still hard to figure out your odds. At least...
Kudos to you for being a good communicator. All my outfitters and guides have been great in the field but most have been lacking in pre-hunt communication skills. It’s not a biggie once you go on a few hunts but it can be awfully frustrating and even intimidating when it’s all new to you.
It’s hard not to overpack especially your first time. My gear was similar to yours (probably more even) on my first guided hunt and my guide went through it and about a third of it was left at base camp. I was packing more as if it were a solo hunt instead of a guided two man hunt.
The spotter...
Seems like a fair amount of redundancy especially considering it’s a guided hunt.
Tent, bivy and tarp?
Tent will probably be enough but seems like bivy could go for sure.
Guide should have kill kit. Guide will probably have a multi-tool too so SA knife not needed.
2 boxes of ammo is OK to...
I had a mortgage when I went on my first 2 sheep hunts years ago. And a note on some ranchland I bought. That first hunt was really a stretch because we also had two small kids at home. That Stone hunt was $9500 base cost plus a $4000 trophy fee. Total cost was right at 15K.
I’m debt free now...
Golden Bear Outfitting for caribou and moose. Northern BC. Flying out of Dallas.
I have hunted sheep in the Yukon twice but the last time was in 2017. Booked American through to Whitehorse both of those trips but American is not giving me that option this time. Last time because I was booked...
What have you guys found to be the best option for flying to Whitehorse from the southern states? I’m in Texas and it seems my options are much more limited than they were 5 plus years ago. A couple of carriers had one stop flights through Vancouver but that appears to be a thing of the past...
Deposit traditionally locks in the price. But that is changing with many outfits these days. I believe in the near future things are likely to change and it will only get you in the line. Which may be all the more reason not to wait.
Hunt prices usually have a built-in increase if booked more...
I was thinking seriously about it also so I sat with a couple of reputable outfitters at the DSC show in Dallas. I have no doubt it would be a great trip.
Costs go by size of the animal. I simply wanted to get the hunting experience so I priced one hunt for the most economical (smallest) Gredos...
A quick glance at the WSF Annual Reports indicates they are doing a good job of spending the $$$ that are raised towards sheep conservation. A big chunk is given to state and provincial wildlife agencies but I assume that’s because those agencies are on the front lines of conservation. Lots of...
