Welcome from AZ. I live here in the mountains and find myself hunting Tx every year. Least I can get a license in TX vs some other states. Wife’s from San Antonio so we are back that way anyway so might as well hunt right?
Luxury item I’d add would be something like a Rab Siltarp. Weighs like 8 Oz. And can be used as a glassing shelter, emergency shelter, a place put meat while quartering up a deer, a ground cloth if you decide to spike out.
Not sure if the x on your list indicates you already have an item or...
Used to do that. Now have more points in more states than I can realistically use (per wife’s instructions I have to spend some time on family vacations). I now just sort of pick and choose one or two hunts a year plus hunt TX and AK whenever I want.
When I lived in CO i participated in several RFW hunts for antelope and elk and found them to be very satisfying experiences. I’m not sure which ranches he’s looking at but there plenty of solid ranches in the RFW program. I hunted the silver spur a few times and was always happy and successful.
I just got my spring bear from AK back two nights ago. I put the skull on a knotted piece of juniper I found and cleaned up and clear coated. The hide which was pretty good I had soft tanned and threw it on the guest bed for now.
Burning points with my buddy in CO for elk first rifle. Should draw a coues deer tag here in AZ. Maybe another Alaska spring bear. Texas in February for axis deer, Aoudad and hogs.
Do you handload? If would highly recommend the 7-08. I handload and have reduced recoil loads with some 113gr bullets at 2815fps which have similar recoils to a .243 Winchester and I have full power elk killing loads driving 140gr bullets at 3003fps. Mine is an Ackley Improved 7-08 but knock...
We got a custom barrel from a gentleman in Tx who does some hobby work. He actually just cut down a burned out PRS barrel and rechambered it to 6ARC and added the barrel extension and machined it down to .750 for the gas block. It turns out it’ll park 3 inside about 3/4” at 100yards.

Just built a 6 ARC for my daughter to hunt with. 20” barrel getting 2673fps with factory 103gr ELDx. I’m sure it will be a handy round out to 300 yards on deer. I’ve taken several hogs and feral goat in Tx with my 5.56 AR-15 along with a bunch of coyotes. I actually enjoy hunting with mine.
So I’ve been considering llamas for several years and have seriously looked into them especially when I lived in CO. I’m back to thinking about it again but now live in Southeast AZ. While we don’t get as hot as Phoenix we still get over 100° some days during the summer Though mid and high 90s...
I’m with @HandgunHTR on this one. I only own one ai and it’s a 7-08ai. If you’re a hand loader ai can make sense. My 7-08ai drives a 140gr absolute hammer at a tick over 3k at the muzzle. My next rifle (if I don’t build a 6ARC bolt gun) will likely be a .22-250ai.
Probably not much benefit. It already doesn’t have much case taper and blowing out the shoulder to 40° wouldn’t add much case capacity either. Though I actually did run into a guy at the range yesterday that was messing with a .308 improved of some interesting flavor. His goal was .300 win mag...
How do the Rx bars hold up in a pack? I’d love to find a bar with less sugar. I’ve been making my own packaroons but sometimes I want something different.
Not many changes for me in 2022. The ones I liked are:
1. Kuiu bone out game bags. Got a couple for free to try and decided I actually really liked them.
2. 12-27x56 maven spotter. Lightweight and clear glass. Won’t be changing up my spotter for awhile.
3. Silencerco harvester evo suppressor...
Can’t speak to service out of Denver but Alaska airlines is my go to. Flew out of Phoenix to anchorage last spring with my rifle and came back with bear meat and halibut. Everything went very smooth and Alaska airlines is very used to transporting firearms and meat.
