Just some general Alaska advice since I'm not a lefty. I see lots of people going to Alaska or Canada who think "Oh bears" and they buy some huge rifle. Whether they can shoot it as accurately is a valid question. Even if they can, a .338, 375 etc. is almost always heavier and that gets old. I...
Funny, a few years ago a Kimber rechambered to .358 was my dream gun. I would have had this thing on the way to JES for a rebore by now. But if match bullets are all they're cranked up to be, I won't need a .358 so no need to bother. When I look at my beloved .308 Ruger Scout Rifle I wonder...
So my bigger dilemma is this...
I wanted to ditch my Ruger American .358 Winchester for something with a bit more range, less recoil (for kids who use it) and the possibility of putting a suppressor on it.
So far the Kimber 6.5 appears to be mechanically accurate but finicky to shoot...
I probably should have waited longer between shots.
I think I actually heard from people putting slightly heavier contour Barrels on Kimbers and still having a light rifle. Maybe a long term project?
I was shopping for good deal on a .223 in Anchorage and scored a deal on a Kimber Hunter in 6.5 Creedmore that was so good I couldn't pass it up. So I've tried the rifle and accuracy seemed lacking. I redid the rings and put my SWFA Ultralight 2.5-10 on it. First three shots were sub MOA as...
I once walked up to a wounded caribou and finished her off with a 10mm to the head. It drilled a perfectly neat 10mm hole through the skull, same on the exit side. She was dead but you could barely see the hole. Later I finished off a caribou with a head shot from a .358 Winchester. That was...
I haven't seen the 73 ELDM load. I am in a similar situation. I'd love to send some to family in the lower 48 and pick it up later.
I've seen open tipped Sierra loads but if I recall they are less consistent right?
Here's how I think of it. My handgun is like my seat belt. Probably won't need it but someday I might REALLY need it. So I usually have a smaller one in the backcountry (so I'll actually carry it all day long). I get the idea of playing the odds over time. I live in Alaska and have had bear...
I did meet a Canadian packing in Colorado but he was a legal resident working there (but not a USA citizen) so somehow that worked. I think he'd gotten a concealed carry permit too.
In Canada you have your PAL to own/posses a gun. Here we don't have an equivalent. Mostly government is just...
I already have a raft. Someone should grab this. Last I check Alpaca did after the fact custom work. Someone could add a deck, make it self bailing or whatever.
Take this with a HUGE grain of salt. I am not an expert but i can provide a data point. I've run a .358 Winchester for a while. There really aren't any good long range bullets for it. So i developmented a load with 160 gr Cutting Edge bullets (Raptors i think). It was going 2700 fps so...
For what it's worth the recoil difference between our 223 AR and 6.5 Grendal AR is negligible to my shoulder (suppressed). 6mm ARC seems pretty easy to find so there is that option. Any of the above would be better then the 30-30 Marlin I started with.
I lived in Midland, TX for a few years. Guadalupe Mountains National Park was about 3 hrs away. Just close enough for good weekend trips. I wouldn't travel across country for it but it was a cool experience. You start in the desert and hike up to a mountain bowl that has trees. I would do it in...
That is wild. I was just about ready to sell mine and swap it for another Trijicon 2.5-10 Huron (had one that has been working well on my other rifle). But now I wonder... Sounds like the little SWFA will work and maybe loose zero enough to cause a miss if I hit it hard (hard enough I'll...
My Ruger Scout rifle uses them. I've carried it a lot and a lot of kids have borrowed it for their first hunt. Never had a mag fall out.
I don't like the 10 rounders but the 3 and 5 round mags are great. I usually have the 3 round in for normal hunting (150 gr SST). I had a 5 round mag with...
I'd love to know more about the Huron line. Mine seems to be holding up. Common sense seems to indicate with Trijicon's record it would be at least as good as my SWFA 2.5-10 scope (which I might replace).
