What does it take to kill a grizzly?

Nice any idea of the wound channel?

    2024 Grizzly Hunt Alaska

I assume this will be glassing for a bear eating berries? I haven't got a grizzly that way yet but have done black bears. I'd expect a lot of glassing then moving quickly. Think about your overall system as "how can I grab everything, chase a bear and be ready for a shot quickly." Bears don't...

Q&A for SWFA UL 2.5-10x32mm Field Eval

I like mine for a compromise scope. But the stories of random failure mean I probably won't buy another one. Eye relief wasn't a problem on my 358 Winchester. Low light performance is a bit less. It hasn't been a problem so far but your mileage may vary.

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

Law enforcement already has AR15s and 12 Guage so it's probably a logical choice. Guys in the bear safety world often use shotguns. They work, they can quickly chamber, and they can launch non lethals. But no one I know hunts with them.

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

Form can you clarify your method of comparing gel to flesh? Are we assuming gel is a 1 to 1 for meat with the chest cavity and lungs counting for less? I'm hoping to take a Sawzall out on some of our less remote hunts to get a cross section of ribs and shoulders so I have something objective...

Amateur Question About Backcountry Stock in Alaska

I am a total newbie at horses and livestock. I helped out with them at summer camp a few times and my wife had goats for a bit. That is it. But... My wife gets a lot of joy out of pets and farm animals in general. At various times she has raised rabbits, dwarf goats, turkeys, chickens and...

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

Here is my grizzly that was 8 foot from claw tip to claw tip. If we zoom in on the picture we can get a reasonable idea of the width of the chest area. When I zoom in the edge of the hide is at the 18 inch mark near the rifle's butt. Now a bit of that is probably fur but lets take a worst case...

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

I think you are correct but I haven't been measuring wound channels so I'm not in a position to say you need x amount of wound channel. The idea of the .223 thread is that anything bigger than the wound created by a 77 gr TMK is diminishing returns on ungulates. I don't think anyone has data on...

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

That is a good data point because it's very similar to my combo for grizzly (260 Partition in a 375 Ruger). I'd say the two fastest black bear kills were a .308 with a slow 125 gr SST and a .358 with a 225 gr Swift A Frame. So sort of opposite ends of the spectrum.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

We've been talking about bears so much I thought maybe I should start a thread about that topic to keep this one focused on .223s. Short version. Bear skulls, shoulders etc are nothing special. The only logical reason to think of grizzly rifles and elk rifle different is that grizzly bears can...

What does it take to kill a grizzly?

There has been such a focus on bears in the .223 thread I thought I’d start a thread on what I think it takes to actually kill a bear. I am not a guide, other people have killed more bears then me. But I have killed lots of black bears, I mentored other hunters to their first bear, and I’ve...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Yes it's a good sign, assuming no new information that makes it sound sub optimal. I just want the full details. I'd love to see pictures. BTW the bear in my avatar is a similar size. I might have some wound pictures from it somewhere (.375). Could be a fun comparison.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Form I don't disagree about the chest of a bear being mostly lung. I guess a better statement is this. To really convince everyone a .223 works we need to see a large bear hit in the chest cavity with an adequate wound channel, probably stopping just under the far side hide. That would put the...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

roosiebull I think yes and no. First, if an elk runs 100 yards in a semi open area that is no big deal. You probably won't think of it as much different than a DRT elk. A grizzly that runs 100 yards is going to get your blood pumping because you either have a gun fight on your hands or you are...

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Grizzly/brown bears are flesh and blood but I was wondering about getting adequate penatration because their chests tend to be more rounded compared to a similar sized ungulate. Theoretically I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder if a given bullet could fully pentrate the vitals of an elk...

Modifying LPVO to meet 1x scope requirements

If I really wanted to do this (I don't) here would be my suggestion. JB weld around the entire dialing ring so you can't turn it without breaking something. Smooth out as much as possible while ensuring that it will never, ever move. Tape off the ends and paint over the scope body with...

    Hot New Woods Defense Pistol

I get liking nice guns. But I carry a pistol for bears most of the spring, summer and fall in Alaska. After a while I care more about comfort than how nice it is. I had a nice S&W .44 for a while. Its long gone. Just not something I could spend all day, every day carrying. There is a real...

What would you say is the wildest part of Colorado?

I read a report about a guy who did an off trail hike along the crest of the Sangri de Cristos. Maybe not as far from a road but a "wilder" experience.
