Wildwilderness probably has the best perspective. I love Alaska but Colorado might be a better place to learn western hunting. The hunting near JBER isn't great so you'd burn up a lot of time getting to better places. That plus the military lifestyle plus winter sounds like a miserable wife. On...
Well a nuisance bear was in my yard so I shot it with the 6.5 Grendal. This was a rushed deal so it was a bit messy.
First shot hit the neck just behind the skull (I aimed for the head and was a bit off). The was a messy 1 inch hole in the neck. Esophagus was cut so the bear was done but he...
Unfortunately we didn't kill anything with the .223 yet. All the bears our crew killed were with my 6.5 Grendal and one with a .308.
Just to prove a point, we took a bear skull from a roughly 6 ft bore and shot it with a TMK. First shot went through the teeth into the skull. Second shot hit...
I got another 6.5 kill to report. My son shot his biggest black bear with the 6.5 Grendal. It squared 5 ft 11 but had short legs and a big torso so it was bigger in the body than you might think. The bear didn't go any farther then bears shot with a .308, 30-06 or .358 that I've seen (all...
I shot a 6 foot grizzly with a 308 and ELDM bullets. A Rocky Mountain grizzly probably won't be huge. Use what you are more comfortable with. I'd go with the lighter rifle assuming it has a good scope and you shoot it well. Pistol or bear spray if it's not accessible. More importantly be smart...
In your shoes I think an AR works great as long as it's accurate. Instead of more/bigger guns I'd get suppressors and/or practice ammo. I do like the 6.5 Grendal because I can easily get hunting ammo for it. Not so easy with the 223 (in Alaska). Maybe another upper? As long as they are legal I'm...
A friend used a 6.5 Grendal to shoot a black bear out of a tree with a 123 gr ELDM. Damage was very impressive. The bullet hit the shoulder and smashed it. It was completely floppy when we skinned the bear. Either it was completely shattered or it might have broken it in two places due to the...
The problem with an 80 gr. ELDM/ELDX for some people is you can't load it to AR length mags. I tried with a 75 gr.and it didn't work.
Do I give up much with a 73 gr. ELDM? I can't remember much about them but I have loaded ammo for those and a very limited supply of TMK handloads.
Yeah those devices are nice. In 2015 my friend and I got into a real bad situation packrafting. Long story (and trip) but a 5 day trip ended up taking 11 days. We used my InReach to communicate with my friend's wife so she wasn't worried about him. I didn't tell my family because I was single...
Well I finally got my AR15 set up with a descent scope and a handful of 77 gr TMK handloads with a couple boxes of 73 gr ELDM as backup. Taking kids out this weekend so hopefully we have a dead bear or two to report.
Unless you are room clearing or facing a bear charge I don't think true 1x is necessary. 2x or 2.5 is nice. I like the Trijicon Huron 2.5-10 scope. Seems durable and it's simple.
Awesome work Thegman! I do wonder if the heart and or lungs were penetrated by bullet shards that just weren't obvious? Seems hard to make a hole like that while totally missing both. In any case I think a big enough hole in the chest cavity can create negative pressure and collapse lungs even...
Short on time to reload. Has anyone tried the Hornady Critical Defense 73gr FTX? Looking for a kid friendly black bear load until I can find my 77 gr TMKs and free time to reload. If it's horrible we stick with the 6.5 Grendal
Details on the grizzly
First shot through the chest took out one lung and "bruised" the other. Apparently it was filling with blood according to a medical friend who looked at my pictures. It also punched through one side of the heart. This shot was at a downward angle. Engrance and exit holes...
Well I was hoping to handload some 223 TMKs but I've had a lot of work and family obligations. So when I saw a 6 foot grizzly near our cabin I used my 308 Ruger Scout Rifle with 168 gr ELDM factory ammo. First shot wad through the chest big entrance and exit wounds. Possibly bigger then my .375...
What bullet and rifle did you use for that 300 yard grizzly shot William? At that point it would be slowing down a lot. Probably not a lot more than what a 38-55 or .375 Winchester does at the muzzle. So effective but I bet that bear would have died a bit faster if you'd been 50 yards away.
Interesting. I'm not surprised a fmj could do that. But I would have assumed it would have led to a narrow wound channel and a slow kill. Sounds like it worked well. Any other things happening? I've seen shattered bone fragments make wounds bigger and I know fmj bullets can upset sometimes.
