Grappling Hook your setup is similar to what I had in mind. I did a mock up with a AR I have. Basically I removed a few parts so the weight was roughly where I'd be if I got a composite lower and made it a side charger. It would strap to a pack nicely but the balance is a bit to the rear which...
I had mine on a Glock 30. The guy I sold it to reported the same type of problemswith a full sized kit as the Glock 30. Similar story from an guy at a shooting course. Common sense would indicate that changing a platform that much could get tricky. Not saying you can't make it work just be...
I don't have one but I did. It was temperamental so I sold it to a guy who handloaded and didn't mind a project. Just know what you are getting into. MN
The synthetic insulation works. I did use a synthetic quilt on the Colorado Trail and it was nice not having to worry about getting it damp. But other than that down is lighter for the same warmth, more compressible and lasts longer. So over all a better investment for most people. A compromise...
I think I have the Enigma. Follow the size guidelines. If in down size up. Get it warm enough for your expected temps and maybe a tad extra. Get a warm hat. Other than that don't overthink it. They work.
Quilts have snaps at the top and a footbox so its not exactly like a blanket. But yes size a bit on the generous size to be safe. I have no idea what kind of temps you are expecting in Alberta so check that.
Another tip is to get one of the warm sleeping hats if they still make them. I like mine.
I had the same suppressor on a 6.5 Grendal pistol and it didn't ring my ears that much. This felt louder even with ear pro. Might have been partly the environment (indoors) but still I don't think I'd shoot that rig as is without ear pro unless a bear was about to get me. Kids noticed the gas...
I sort of inherited a .223 AR pistol and that thing is LOUD even with a suppressor. This thread gave me the idea to flip the gas block around to see if the lack of "port pop" is enough to make it somewhat close to hearing safe. I'll just manually cycle it for a few shots to test the theory.
If...
I am not totally convinced it is a problem to solve either atman. Seems a .223 goes through a moose just fine so I assume it would do fine on a big bear. I just I don't think we have enough data to say definitely yet.
But even if we proved that it doesn't mean we need to go to the other extreme...
I agree Thegman. But I think focusing on those questions (somewhat quantifiable) is more intelligent than following rabbit trails like "So and So uses a .375 Mag, so that is the way to go." Maybe at some point someone will shoot a 10 foot brown bear and find that a certain bullet size won't go...
Let's stay on topic. How big and how long does a wound need to be on a grizzly for a quick kill? My .308 worked. Based on black bear kills I think a 6.5 Grendal would work. At least one grizzly had been killed with a .223 77TMK. If a bullet has a limit aside from the velocity expansion window I...
I like my Polonium 30 a lot on a 308 bolt action. But I don't know about a shorter version. I consider mine good enough to shoot without ear pro occasionally. Important because I have damage to an ear and I don't want more.
Yes I've seen Thegman's rifle thread. I just prefer bolt actions that are a bit more "streamlined" for easy carry. Maybe the UL UL rifle would be so light I wouldn't mind the awkward shape but we'll have to see. My wife and I really like our Savage Rascal 22 rifle for small game. Its so easy to...
My plans to hunt a grizzly with a .223 didn't work out and I'm still not loving the .223 AR that I do have. It needs a bit of work before I'll use it an longer range.
I'm currently pretty content with my .308 and 6.5 Grendal. This winter I might work on a .223 project to try for the spring.
I...
I get most of my bears in the spring so fat is less of an issue. Fall black bears have fat but not where it would affect bullet performance. I have seen but not skinned so really fat brown bears immediately before hibernation starts. Maybe just maybe that would affect performance. How much fat...
I didn't end up using a stand for a variety of reasons. I did have game cameras set up and the same moose came by multiple times. IF I had a good bull on camera I could see this idea working. Maybe next your, especially if I try bow hunting.
I called 2 moose in very close this season. Unfortunately not legal sized. Irons would have worked but I liked my scope because I could take a final look at the antlers before pulling the trigger (or not pulling it in this case). So it can work just be aware of your limits.
